I was out at the game and didn’t get to see the video yet, so I am sure I will miss some things. Here are some of my reactions from Preseason Game 1.
First teams looked solid. Philip Rivers was kept clean and didn’t force his passes. He drove the team down the field on his first drive and chewed up a ton of clock. Ryan Mathews looked nice in his action and the guys look like they are doing alright with the new offense. I love the different formations that the offense runs out of. It is refreshing. stacked receivers and bunch formations all over the place.
I wish we were able to get the touchdown on that first drive. Settling for the field goal sucked. Danario Alexander would have been a great weapon in that area. We will have to find some players to make an impact in the red zone. We tried to get it to Malcom down there.
The defense was stout and Dwight Freeney looks like he can still provide a pass rush. He was quick on the outside and was able to put pressure on Russell Wilson. Didn’t get to see much of Manti Te’o on defense, but I think I remember he missed picking up a receiver in his zone. Ran right behind him.
FitzWilly, your boy Fozzy Bear looked pretty nice out there. I liked his effort, even though he didn’t have much help from his offensive line. Look forward to seeing him in the next couple of preseason games to see if he can make a push for a roster spot.
Charlie Whitehurst is trash. We can go on and on all day about this. Let’s just can him now. There were so many receivers that he just didn’t see open. He could have had Dan DePalma deep on one his first few plays. He overthrew that deep pass to Keenan Allen. Real ugly performance from Charlie.
Dan DePalma was nice. Didn’t blow me away, but nice. He dropped a pass that I thought he should have caught. We should give him a shot at special teams soon, since Richard Goodman looked like trash returning kicks.
Josh Johnson was a fail on all levels. Covering receivers and returning punts. He had all kinds of trouble just trying to field some punts.
The secondary needs some depth. We need to look for some help when people start getting cut.
Why the heck do we have two players with the number 44. I thought Chris Gronkowski was playing linebacker at one point.
Brad Sorensen looked nice in the pocket. He was able to move and shake and find receivers while he was on the move. Time to give him a shot on the 2nd team.
Why did Mike Willie clank a pass that was thrown right between the numbers? How am I supposed to root for that? Michael Hill? Same thing. Gotta step it up on when the cameras turn on.
I will check out the tape later to see what else I find.
