It has been an awesome and busy holiday, but this thing has gotten the back burner while I have been off galivanting around the city. My fault. Usually I have some stuff prepped while I am out, but this part of the offseason is death. Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and if you had to work today… at least it is the weekend now.
Let’s look at some of the free agents that are left unsigned and see if they could work out with the Chargers. Here is a list of some of the guys available.
John Abraham DE ATL – This would be awesome, but it won’t happen. I would love seeing Dwight Freeney and John Abraham chasing after the quarterbacks, but we don’t have the money to get this done. Abraham still wants to get paid. I think he still has a little bit left in the tank and could have been someone we looked at if we didn’t get Freeney.
Cedric Benson RB GB – There is a possibility that the Chargers could look to add another runningback onto the roster, but there are other guys on this list that could be a better fit over Benson.
Brandon Lloyd WR NE – Before we drafted Keenan Allen and before Danario Alexander signed his one year deal, this would have made some sense. He worked with Mike McCoy in Denver and we could have used some help at receiver. Now there isn’t any reason to bring him in.
Vonta Leach FB BAL – Some feel that LeRon McClain can do the job well enough, but I still think that adding the best fullback in the league could do wonders for the running game. Ryan Mathews would appreciate it. The demand doesn’t seem there, so we should sneak in and snag him.
Willis McGahee RB DEN – If we wanted to add a backup runningback to the roster, McGahee would make some sense. He has gone to the playoffs twice as the starting runningback for Mike McCoy and could be a physical veteran back to give Ryan Mathews a little push.
Brandon Moore G JETS – Why is he still available? I personally would rather have Moore on the roster over Jeromey Clary, but it seems that we are going to see what Clary can do for us. He is younger and could turn out to be a really good guard. Only time will tell. If only he played left guard.
Richard Seymour DT OAK – I would love this pickup, but Seymour isn’t going to take a pay cut. One of the concerns on the roster is the depth at defensive line. Seymour would be a huge improvement to that depth.
Eric Winston T KC – He is a solid right tackle, but we have DJ Fluker now. We drafted Fluker to be the main man at right tackle, so Winston makes no sense.
Michael Turner RB ATL – A back with San Diego ties and the fans still love him. Tom Telesco remembers him well. Turner tore up the Colts and Telesco has mentioned that moment before. Turner would be a short yardage back and would be the starter if Ryan Mathews were to go down with an injury. The signing makes sense.
