The offseason started with a flourish with action left and right and it has slowed down a bit, but the team still has holes that need to be filled.
The biggest holes are the backup QB spot and the starting middle LB spot. Billy Volek still has not signed a contract and it is possible that he is looking at other options. I have heard the name Matt Moore as a possibility if Volek decides to jump onto another team. Volek is our best option as the backup, but if our backup sees a lot of snaps this season we may be in a whole lot of hurt anyway.
LB Kevin Burnett signed on with the Miami Dolphins yesterday and it leaves a big hole in the middle of the defense. Takeo Spikes was brought in to start at one middle backer spot, but the other spot is headed up by rookies Donald Butler and Jonas Mouton right now. I am hoping that Nick Barnett chooses to play in San Diego. Kirk Morrison from SDSU would be a nice option as well.
Then there are spots on the roster that are not so high on the priority list, but still could consider some moves to fill in the depth at the positions. The wide receiver spot is a little thin with Seyi Ajirotutu and rookie Vincent Brown looking to fill the 3rd and 4th receiver spots. Kelley Washington may move up the depth chart to steal some time from the kids as well, but that is not a lot of depth at the position. Patrick Crayton is the number 2 guy, but he is best used as a slot receiver. It would be nice to add a veteran to the roster to get some snaps with Rivers.
The situation reminds me a lot of last season, when we were looking for more depth at the spot with preseason winding down and we picked up Patrick Crayton. A couple of options from last season are again options this year with Terrell Owens and TJ Houshmandzadeh as possibilities for AJ to think about. I honestly think that both players would do great with Rivers and I do have a little mabcrush on TO. Another option that Staff Writer Ben Haber brought up was bringing back Legedu Naanee. That actually makes a lot of sense if Legs can’t catch on with another team and wants to sign a short contract.
This is just me, but I think we need more veteran depth at running back. We lost Sproles and only have Jordan Todman and Curtis Brinkley behind Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews. I would love to see San Diego product Ricky Williams brought into town to take over that role.
One other roster move I would like to see is bringing back Brandon Manumalune. First because I love when announcers butcher his name and secondly because he can serve as a good option in the goal line and can also play some fullback if needed.
What other moves do you think the Bolts have to make?
