The walking wounded returning to Chargers roster

I keep looking at Malcom Floyd as an addition to the roster. Just looking along the roster, there are a few additions to the team that were not here during the playoff run. Dwight Freeney will be returning from injury. Malcom Floyd will be returning from injury. Stevie Williams will be returning from injury. Brandon Taylor? Larry English? We don’t know what those last 3 players can provide to the roster, but we know that they have shown the potential in the past to produce.

Larry English was a first round draft pick that was selected for his abilities to get after the quarterback, His injuries have been his downfall, but when he has had the opportunity to play, he has shown the ability to get after the quarterback, He has to impress the coaching staff this training camp with players like Dwight Freeney, Jarret Johnson, Melvin Ingram and Jeremiah Attaochu already expected to make the roster.

Brandon Taylor was taken in the 3rd round of the draft and was ready to take the starting safety job next to Eric Weddle before he went down with an injury. Could this be the time that he finally contributes to the roster? This could be his chance to play.

Stevie Williams will be another player on the roster that can help in the secondary. He isn’t the biggest corner, and we just drafted another small corner, but he showed that he can make plays on the field during the preseason. He still needs to show his worth during the regular season and still has to prove a lot of things.

Those 3 players could help the defense a ton if they can play up to that potential. Another player that can make an impact, that has proven his ability to make plays, is Dwight Freeney. He will be back for another season and he has shown the ability to put consistent pressure on quarterbacks. He will be back and hopefully will have a full season to chase after quarterbacks.

Malcom Floyd is back for another season and his presence on the field should give the team some balance in the passing game. Philip Rivers can look to hit Floyd down the field and he can take some of the pressure off of Keenan Allen for his sophomore season.

The wounded warriors have a lot to prove in their return. If they are able to provide some help on the roster, we should have some nice depth around the roster. SHOULD…

Spot on except for Larry English. It’s time to cut our losses. I’d rather roll the dice on Law.

    • Gunnar Martin

Law will be really interesting for all of us to evaluate once we see him play. He’s a total mystery at this point. For all we know, he’ll be the best pass rusher on the team this year :)

    • Ernie Padaon

      i hope Law outperforms him.

    • CALiFORNiAkiD

      Telesco saw the Superbowl.
Law and Attaochu with a healthy Freeney and Ingram will make our pass rush scary.

English and Kesiar are likely gone to me.

      • Derek

I think English keiser and law are battling for the same spot. Tourek might be in there too. I think tourek and keiser win due to high motors. But yeah law is a ? English would have to be spectacular to out weigh the risk of re injury and at his best he’s always done the speed rush then tries to out muscle the tackle. That’ll only work in Miami.

    • tonyloc1970 .

      Me too.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Nothing like a 1st round pick getting beat out by one of the CFL’s premiere pass rushers, I’d love to see it.

  • Stefanie Smith

Melvin Ingram should be even healthier this season.

    • Ernie Padaon

yup.. and I cant wait to see him put a big hit on Manning

      • veazy

I still remember his debut against Rodgers. That probably made the Packers fans nervous.

        • Derek

I remember he was a Tasmanian devil! Shoving o linemen like tackling dummies! He is terrifying to immobile qb’s if we develop a decent nose Imma start doing the jaws song on third down.

          • Stefanie Smith

            Yes! The Jaws song. Perfect.

  • Sergio Quintero

They were 9-7 with less than 6 games from Freeney, Floyd, Ingram, and zero games from Steve Williams & Brandon Taylor. If those guys play even with a tougher schedule I see no reason for 10-11 wins.

    • Ernie Padaon

definitely looking up.. hard to trust in some of these guys though. some players are just always injured

      • philiprules

don’t know if I’d put Ingram, Williams & Taylor in the “always” injured category just yet. Freeney has always hung in there pretty well until suffering the Charger injury curse. Floyd, well, love the guy but damn will he ever catch a break?

      • Sergio Quintero

Floyd, English, Mouton & Taylor, have a history of injuries, Floyd had never had an injury before last year that was a very serious injury, he has had the miss one to 3 weeks stuff. The other 3 guys definitely fall under you can’t trust them for anything.

The rest of the guys it seems more of a one time injury and have generally have been healthy.

  • Nick Mansoor

I’m excited to see Steve Williams play, I want him to be great. Plus he’s gonna be rocking Jammer old number :0

    • Stefanie Smith

Same here. I saw some videos of Williams from his college play. Yeah, he made some great plays. Just has to stay healthy.

  • jcrisp

Is brandon taylor good 2 go now?

    • Ernie Padaon

well.. we thought he was good to go last season. not sure if he is able to roll yet

  • Padraigh Keogh

What about Alexander? when is he back?

    • Stefanie Smith

Probably not going to be back for awhile. Google a bit and you will find a few articles saying he had to get a second ACL surgery done and now some sort of infection set in. He’s got some way to go still. Basically, he has had a pretty big setback in his recovery.

    • Ernie Padaon

we have not re-signed him and don”t expect to

    • Sergio Quintero

Basically his career is over, no medical staff will give the go ahead to sign him, maybe someone signs him to league minimum by mid-season, and that is doubtful.

This article is pretty explicit and sobering about how bad Alexander’s situation is, the fact he has multiples surgeries on both knees, had an infection that added another year to his recovery, makes him a loser’s bet.

  • Nick619chargers4life

Freeney, Floyd please stay healthy . That’s all I got to say .

    • Ernie Padaon

if they did… we would be sitting pretty

  • Daniel Sutter

I think you left out an injury that actually affected us a lot last year. He was playing well before going down and developed a lot from year one to year two. Dont count out Mike Harris in his third year. He will add good depth to the O Line…

    • Nick619chargers4life

He was playing extremely well. It was night and day from year one to year two. If he stops buying all the damn ice cream sandwiches and microwave burritos from my girls work he should be fine .

      • Daniel Sutter

        Really, thats funny …

    • Ernie Padaon

good point.. he was playing well for us last season before he went down. he would be quality depth on the roster when he returns

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

after reading this I forgot about Harris too

  • 21serg

Get rid of English smh we chose him over clay mathews clay freakn mathews

    • Ernie Padaon

that was one of hte worst moves ever… no idea what AJ was thinking. I still remember scratching my head after that selection.

  • Matt

We should just cut our losses and give a chance to players who could contribute. Larry English and Brandon Taylor need to go. They are a waste of a roster spot and I would rather have two healthy players instead. Maybe Cordarro Law and Alden Darby?

To be honest I would have rather drafted a number two wide receiver who could stay healthy instead of getting the 8-10 games a year from Floyd.

    • Ernie Padaon

to be honest, i was hoping for a number 2 receiver as well. I am tired of players that get injured all the time as well.

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801
Just saw this article…. Funny how when the draft just ended a poster in here had to change their profile name a couple of times to try and whatever…
Said individual went on a rant about how not so good the Chargers are and ranked below 26th… Yet above is a link off NFL site that has the Chargers at 13?! I Love It!!!
Keep doubting the Chargers…we shall see once the season gets under way.
    Go Chargers!

  • arnie

One more thing. Keep Addae OFF the practice field. How many of his own players has he taken out?
