What’s Left for the Chargers In Free Agency

So Telesco didn’t make that big free agency splash some critics thought he would do. I expected him not to, since we are broke in cap space. But we did pick up players that added better depth to our roster. Our best pickup so far has been ex-Colt Donald Brown. I will be honest, I was pretty upset when I found out we snagged him… Why? I really wanted to bring in a young rookie from the draft like De’Anthony Thomas or a player like him in the later rounds. But picking up Donald Brown wasn’t a bad idea, I mean he is a hell of a lot better than Ronnie Brown after seeing what he was able to do last year. But then again, his nickname in Indianapolis was “Damnit Donald”… you could only imagine why they gave him that name, he made too many mistakes. Hopefully he can carry his momentum from last season and continue his 5.3 yards per carry when we need him to.

Some other notable mentions we picked up in free agency so far include TE David Johnson and LB Cavell Conner (another ex-colt, sigh). Now we do have other holes that are still of a bigger need that we have to address soon. These positions include cornerback, wide receiver, nose tackle, guard, center and maybe safety. It looks like we will be filling in these holes in the draft since Telesco has been pretty quite the last couple days. He has been making strides to fill our need for a wide receiver through free agency but he hasn’t found any luck so far. Other than that, he hasn’t been doing too much, which I don’t blame him for it, we have almost no money (Love you too A.J). So without further adieu, here are our few options we have available to us in free agency before we head into the draft:

Nose Tackle:

  • Peria Jerry – I like the option of going with Jerry on this one, he is 29 years of age but is definitely an up grade over what we currently have. He has great burst speed coming off the line of scrimmage and he has a nose for the football, which I love seeing in players. He managed 3.5 sacks last season, and is a really great threat when healthy. If he can manage not to damage himself, he will be a great addition to this squad. He should come cheap too, so it will be light on TT’s wallet.
  • Alex Carrington - he is also another great addition to this squad, he is on the younger side, 26 years of age. He is really good when it comes to blitzing but he can be a little lazy when trying to hunt down the QB from behind. And he is little more versatile, being able to play both NT and DE positions which can be a plus for us if someone were to get hurt.

Our options in this position are running a little thin, so it looks like were going to pick up a NT in the draft and have that player start right away, which I am not a fan of doing, I’m the type to let a newbie develop and then hit the field, but no worries, it would be a better decision to pick up a rookie for this position, plus he will come cheap too.

Wide Receiver:

  • Kenny Britt - He is arguably the best available free agent WR in the market right now, and he wont command that much money since he has had injury issues and off field issues as well. but I’m willing to give him a chance because he is really good at what he does when healthy and is definitely worth the risk.
  • Danario Alexander - things don’t look too good for Alexander, his most recent surgery is giving his knee more complications, he has suffered from a troublesome infection, he might still be able to make it back before the 2014 year. He showed great chemistry with Rivers and a lot of confidence as a deep ball threat as well. He will be cheap for us too, he would most likely be given a similar contract as the one he received last year, about 1.5 Million for 1 season. It would be nice to see him back, but the 25 year olds career might be in jeopardy.
  • Davone Bess – I like Bess, he can man the outside opposite of Allen and can return kicks too, which is a plus. He had a good run with the Dolphins but didn’t do much with the Browns, but he had no one good throwing to him. Now if he had a QB like Rivers throwing to him he could actually do something with the ball, he has great speed and good hands and is only 28 years of age, I would sign him to a 1-2 year contract just to test him.

The list on this position still has some good talent left, but the majority are a bit on the older side. We don’t have a true #2 receiver, and Malcolm Floyd and DX are both big question marks, they just can’t play a full season of football so expect Telesco to pick up a WR in the draft if we don’t pick one up soon.

It doesn’t look like were picking up our featured CB in Free Agency, that’s a huge sign that we will be picking up our guy in the Draft, expect players like Kyle Fuller, Darqueze Dennard, Jason Verrett, Stanely Jean-Baptiste and other players of that caliber as a potential target for us in the draft. I just don’t see Telesco picking up some old guy in free agency since he mentioned that he wanted speed and youth on this squad, and there is nothing but the exact opposite of what were looking for in free agency.

We are definitely going to draft a center/guard or pick up an undrafted rookie. The only guys available in free agency are all old, and that’s not something we want to do since Nick Hardwick is probably going to leave next season. I say draft a kid in the later rounds and have him learn from Hardwick as much as possible while he is still here. Same applies to Jeromey Clary‘s replacement, Clary wont cut it, but draft a dude to take his position. And don’t let Clary anywhere near the kid in terms of mentoring. He is better off getting tips from D.J Fluker for priming his techniques.  That’s our best option.

  • Kerry Rhodes - Aw come on guys, this would be a good thing for Addae. Rhodes has no plans to retire, he still has plenty of tread left on those tires. Yes, we all know about those rumors of Rhodes being accused of being a homosexual (they were false accusations) but its OK. He could mentor Addae for a season and then unleash the beast within Addae the season after that. We can switch it up with them so Rhodes can play in certain packages and Addae in others. He will come cheap too, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Expect a late round pick up of a safety or Deone Buccanon early since the Chargers have clearly expressed huge interests in him, that would give our SS corps some competition and the lesser man will be solid backup for the roster.

Other than that guys, I really don’t see Telesco making huge strides to pick up players to fill these positions within the next couple days. He will most likely try to address these all in the draft, but it would be nice to see one or two more pickups to lessen our laundry list for the draft. Lets see what happens, in the mean time, chillax for the next couple weeks and don’t expect too much from Telesco.

Nice job to find these players! Perry and Carrington come from which team?

    • Rich Plascencia⚡️

      Perry falcons, Carrington bills

    • Nick Mansoor

Thanks haha I know my players lol. Thanks for heads up Rich.

  • Padraigh Keogh

I have a feeling if Nix is on the table at 25 TT will take him. If he is a CB in 2nd. If not a CB in first.

  • davacho

free agency should include players we resigned. look at the chargers offseason through that lens and we did great. : )

    • Ernie Padaon

    • Nick Mansoor

Yeah true, I like the resignings better than the pickups honestly. I did forget to mention that lol

      • davacho

i know i posted on your article, but it wasn’t directed at you (sorry). : )

        • Nick Mansoor

          Haha all good

  • Marcel West-Bailey

What’s I find funny is I actually have Rhodes on my Madden 25 Chargers team and he and Weddle together. I don’t think I’ve given up a completion for more than 10 yeards. But then again my secondary is completely different.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

That’s awesome, That pairing in real life would be amazing to bad no one gives the guy a shot. I kinda hope TT does.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

I’m pretty certain Addae’s getting that starting spot. For an undrafted rookie he’s progressed leaps and bounds and he doesn’t seem to be letting up.

        • Julien Bélair

yep and I believe that he was undrafted because he have very little experience playing safety. But the guy has all the physical tools and work ethic to be our future SS

        • Tony

I follow Addae on Instagram. Dude loves the game. He’s training in Vegas somewhere, I have a feeling he’s gonna be a beast this upcoming season

    • Sergio Quintero

I think the chargers like the combo of Addae/Gilchrist for the SS spot, I also think they want to see what a “healthy” Taylor can do.

I think if they sign anything its a complimentary Nose Tackle and they will be done for Free Agency. As prediction for NT: Sopoaga or Pickett.

      • Marcel West-Bailey

Personally I’d rather have Cody. He’s young, cheap, and fat as hell.

        • Sergio Quintero

Too many bad opinions from “experts” too feel comfortable about him, I remember him from Alabama if I could get that player sure, it just seems he kind of train wrecked in Baltimore. I still would be happy with him, rather than status quo.

          • Marcel West-Bailey

Well some people just need a fresh start. I don’t know if that’s what he needs but it works for some. Let’s hope it works for Ghee

      • Julien Bélair

Gilchrist can still compete fort the cb2 job he already played that position for us

        • Sergio Quintero

I actually thought Gilchrist played his best ball as this nickel corner/safety hybrid he seemed to play late in the season, he either was covering slot receiver, or staying in the box and assisting the running game.

Considering slot corners play from 55-80% of the game, its basically a starting position. Slot corners probably play more plays than Nose Tackles something to think about.

  • Sergio Quintero

There are few other Nose Tackles that are useful (Franklin, Sopoaga, Pickett) and Wilfork hasn’t been released yet, but the other positions nothing is that much of an upgrade to their current roster, and that isn’t a criticism of the guys you identified Nick, the market has been chewed of about 85% of its quality at this point.

On the Brown signing, for me its all about preparing for 2015, both Mathews & Woodhead are free agents, and TT wants a fall back & wants a player to take away leverage in particular from Mathews.

    • Nick Mansoor

I like Franklin and Pickett, but they are really old and I don’t think Telesco would give them chance .

    • philiprules

Sopoaga will be 33 near the start of the season. Was drafted by SF, played DE most of his career there, moved to NT when they released Franklin, and ended up released by SF in ’12. Signed by Phil in ’13 and then traded to NE mid season along with a 6th round pick to get a 5th round pick return. NE released him at the end of the season. 14 games played in ’13 (9 starts) with a total of 12 tackles. Kinda says something don’t ya think?

      • Sergio Quintero

Useful is spin word for: can play but is not a difference maker, and mediocre at best. The reality is that Lissemore is very likely their starting NT, his level of play was actually pretty good, his history of durability is not, these guys are more about preparing for his history of injuries.

Beyond Wilfork tell me about a guy you find that is good, and that fits the chargers meager expense plan.

  • Rsmboltfan

I am hoping that Denver’s new big money players slack off now that their pockets are filled. I trust Telesco but disappointed we did not address NT, S or CB with immediate impact in FA.

    • Anthony95

Couldn’t, $3M cap space and each impact guy went for $6M/year + in FA. AJ left us hand tied

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m not sure if I’d want KA hanging out with a vet like Britt, might sound like a sweet combo but what don’t need a TO/Ocho Cinco type out break in the future……or maybe we do? lol just kidding lets sign him.

    • Sergio Quintero

I agree Britt is a douchebag actually. KA already has a little too much diva, Britt is bad mojo.

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

ya I couldn’t see any good coming out of that, I liked him til I saw how he acted during games (like a little boy) and can see why his former coach would just send him to the bench. I did really liked when he landed on his head though, that pic above was a great play he made all on his own.

  • Mark Viguri

Well researched list, confirms why Telesco didn’t do so much. Only
regret letting Cam Thomas get away for $2 MIL a yr to
Pittsburgh. Seemed like he got in Pagano’s dog house but who knows. Sure
looks like Telesco is tipping his hand for the draft with gaping holes
    at corner and NG.

    • Anthony95

Cam was horrible and really not worth resigning. Lissemore is better and rotation with Geathers will give kid time to grow a bit. And yes everyone knows we want NT & CB in draft. But every team knows everyone’s needs. Its a matter of where u take them

  • Anthony95

I think Telesco has done an excellent job so far as our GM. The dead money AJ had on books is crazy. So, I’m looking at 2014 & 2015 as a combination to get us exactly where we need to be.

In 2015 we drop what $12M in dead money. Imagine if we had that now.

With this deep of a draft class we are in good shape and even more so as the depth is exactly where we need it, CB and WR.

Resigning our guys was what we needed, people forget we were decimated by injuries and yet made playoffs and in toughest division in football (NFC West tied with us for this).

With a healthy team Telesco needs to do the following before the draft:
    1. restructure Weddle
    2. restructure Rivers
    3. restructure Clary
    4. resign Ohrmberger
    5. sign a FA NT (not much available but to compete in case we can’t land one in draft)
    6. sign FA KR (we had a horrible return game last year and need a dynamic speed guy here)

Then IMO we are truly for the draft. In draft its:
    pass rusher

    • tubbs45

The expectation for next year is 40 mil in cap space… we should be able to do something with that, right???

      • Anthony95

Yep exactly. I’m really excited for where our team could be headed especially over the next 4-5 years if Telesco does it right.

With my 1-6 being done we would then have Ohrmberger for depth this year & next year he is our in-house replacement for Hardwick.

We would then have our long-term solution at NT & hopefully CB #1.

Plus have OG/OT (to replace Clary in 2015)
WR (with V. Brown having 2 years on contract, if he produces then we have our top 3 WRs for the future and extend V Brown. If he struggles again, we cut him and have our top 2 WRs for the future and draft another in 2015).

At RB if Mathews plays well but won’t take a contract TT offers, then we have Brown and draft another in 2015.

Also in 2015 drafting a stud pass rusher should be priority #1

Then follow that up with O-lineman to back-up in 2015 and eventually replace Dunlap. Followed by depth across the board.

We have the key pieces to dominate: Rivers, Fluker, Mathews, Allen, on offense and Butler, Ingram, and Weddle on defense. Add to that with 2014 drafting of NT, CB, WR. So that is 5 on offense and 5 on defense. Great start to a dynasty

Then in 2015 draft we get OG, OT, & pass rusher so we will have 7+ on offense and 6+ on defense. That is the beginning of a true dynasty right when Manning sails off into the hall of fame sunset. (perfect timing too just enough time to kick his butt a couple of times before he retires!)

Oh yeah in 2016 drafting Rivers eventual replacement to groom if we don’t get a gem QB in late 2015 is a priority.

How can you not be excited as a Bolts fan!

    • Sergio Quintero

Your mock draft round 1-5??, very much agree, they could have used money from next year’s cap to get players this year, I know that doesn’t sound like Telesco, that has been my disagreement with their strategy this year.

Some signings you would make for the positions you mentioned??

      • Anthony95

with not a lot of NTs available bare with me here:

NT – ideal Wilfork – please! – or we gotta look at any of the following:
-Alex Carrington (as Nick mentioned), or Pat Sims or Melton (don’t think we could afford but maybe with the restructure we could)
-3rd option: Aubray Franklin (old faithful) or Isaac Spoaga, or guys like Fred Evens or Shaun Rodgers

Outside of Wilfork, Carrington, Sims, or Melton we are simply adding guys to a even rotation on short term deals.

For KR – really wanted us to get Hester or McCluster. So, either we get Hester or Bess (like Nick suggested) or Joshua Cribbs, or Scotty McGee

        • Tony

Jacoby Ford is still my pick for WR/KR.

          • Ernie Padaon

i can see this happening… he better work on that fumbling issue though

  • tubbs45

whats the deal with Rich Ohrnberger ???? Surprised we havent signed him yet. center and guard, flex player…

    • Julien Bélair

I think we have plenty of time to sign him I’M not worried at all

      • Gunnar Martin

Yeah I think we might wait and see what happens in the draft and go from there. There’s a good chance he would sign elsewhere between now and then, but that’s what I am expecting to happen.

    • Ernie Padaon

he is someone i would love back on the roster as well

  • Patuko

I think we are in pretty good shape. I think this is where TT should definitely do the whole draft the BPA exercise. We don’t have that much cap room left and if we get some great players that produce first year or two, we will have a solid foundation. I think if he drafts DBA for defense, we would be much better. I only worry about when PR will need/want to retire. Then, we may be looking at Ryan Leaf days all over again. And since they want a new stadium, win now seems like the best philosophy.

    • Patuko

      *BPA not DBA.

    • Julien Bélair

I remember that last year we were mad about the depth of the team. Now we have depth and we will find our next stars in the draft

  • esco charger

I hope they sign mount cody to a cheap deal then we can get nix u can put lessemore back at DE and we can have great depth on the D line I like where are linbackers are at the moment but maybe an outside backer we need another corner and I think we will be fine we still dont know what we got with Steve Williams are safety play wasn’t bad but who is gona need safeties when are line will dominate weddle can play in the secondary so we can get turnovers and not have to worry about the run

  • afroamongfew

Earl Bennett was just cut, the Bears were asking him to take a pay cut even though he was making only $2.4 million this year. Decent #3 guy in the Bears’ system and he has the same reputation for making clutch 3rd down catches that KA13 has earned.

As for NT, we could always take a flyer on Terrance Cody to see if he could work. It’d be nice to get an NT with actual playing experience in a 3-4.

  • RZ

Pat Sims is still available (for now) DT from the Raiders. He played inside in their 4-3 scheme but also was the NT when they mixed in their 3-4 look throughout games. He can adjust to NT full time if he had to. 6’2” 310 he would plug that hole in the middle, even just pick him up as depth and rotate him. He shouldn’t be too expensive…hopefully. I don’t think he’ll be available too much longer though.

  • Diegoblue

I would take Britt for cheap 1 year contract.. Upside is worth the risk
