Larry English Didn't See Field Enough to Have Contract Voided

September 30, 2012; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel (7) is hit by San Diego Chargers linebacker Larry English (52) while passing in the second half at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chargers won 37-20. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Larry English is still a Charger… for now. His rookie contract didn’t get voided because he fails to reach the minimum amount of playing time in order to become a free agent (Pro Football Talk). Same old story for English, his inability to stay on the field has screwed us once again. Instead of becoming a free agent, he is on the roster eating up some salary cap space.

What will the Chargers do with him now? There still is possibility that he is released off of the roster. If the Chargers chose not to void his deal, then we would assume that he would be sticking on the roster.

The Chargers need pass rushers. Larry English is… nevermind. If Tom Telesco had been here since the beginning and seen what kind of issues that we had gone through with his injuries, then there would be no questions about it. But Tom hasn’t gone through the turmoil that Chargers fans have gone with him.

Huh. I didn’t know that playing time could be a factor with voiding the last year of a contract. I guess that explains a lot. So how much cap space does he take up now? And when is the soonest we can cut him?

    • Derek

He’s a measly 1.5 mill and I know that ur pay is diminished when ur not playing and also for being on ir so why is he being persecuted like his last name is Gaither. His injuries have been legitimate. The time he’s put into rehab is too. I get he hasn’t produced as a first round should but when healthy has been a good back up. As I said before things could be worse aj could have said fuck u sd and gave him a Sanchez contract extension before he left.

Yeah it sucks we took him instead of clay Matthews but what’s done is done. Bottom line he knows our defense and has produced moderately when healthy. I’m happy to have him till a better option arises

    • Ernie Padaon

5 year and 11 sacks for someone that only can pass rush… Not a good look. Thomas Keiser already is a better option and I would even let Tourek Williams get a shot before he does. Can’t trust a guy that won’t stay healthy.

      • Derek

Look closer at when he’s on the field. He is decent every down backer. He can rush he can also cover. He’s the definition of a depth player. My point is his value comes in not being a weakness on the field. He will never be player of the week. But he also won’t be a part of an opposing teams highlight reel. Ur right kaiser is a better rusher but that’s also his weakness, he comes on the field you know he’s rushing and if he isn’t you know you can exploit him for yards. That Peyton int was due to him being hit that was a gift. If Peyton wasn’t touched 100% that pass would have been completed

        • Ernie Padaon

English would be used in the same manner. He isn’t a good outside linebacker and should be better at getting to the quarterback. He has one move to try and get to the quarterback. He tries to beat everyone with speed to the outside and he gets pushed behind the quarterback on every play. I want him to do so much better, he just never proves anything on the field. ‘

I am not saying that Keiser is that much better either. Just saying that he has made more of an impact in his few games than any impact that we have seen from English in his career.

          • Derek

True. Now that I think on it English might be a 4-3 olb but anyway till there is a better option I’m happy to have him. Looks like Michael Sam

  • Cgoodness13

Shouldn’t it be the opposite? It should be that if they weren’t healthy enough to get the amount of field time their contract should be voided

    • Ernie Padaon

      Ha! Right!

    • Gunnar Martin

Yeah that would make so much more sense

    • arnie

True. But i think it’s in place to protect rookies, from impatient organizations.

  • Rob Base

Feel for the dude. I remember watching the draft and the comment from my uncle was priceless. He’s said WTF why did your Super Chargers pick him and laughed. I argued of course that he had skills but 11 sack career! C’mon man our Bolts need some nastiness on D and Old English don’t cut it.

  • Peter Thompson

Yep… pretty much agree with all of that. Except, I do think TT knows exactly what kind of struggles English has had staying healthy over the years, and the frustration that comes with it. BUT…. If he’s healthy through OTA’s & camp, looks much better than Tourek & Kaiser, and earns the 4th spot on the depth chart… will Charger fans forget about the past… again? Maybe.. maybe not… I expect to be reading a “Can Larry English Turn It Around In 2014: Take 4″ article soon, methinks.. right Ernie? hahahaha.
