Biggest Fears Going into 2014 Season For Chargers Fans?

What are your biggest fears going into the 2014 season? As a Chargers fan, what are your biggest fears?

Here are a few of the things that freak me out if I sit and think about it for too long:

The biggest fear going into 2014 is the schedule that we have to face. We have to face the NFC West this coming season and none of those teams are going to be a cake walk. If/when we make it into the playoffs, we will be well tested during the regular season. We saw how bad the Seattle Seahawks beat up on the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. We will have to face them in the regular season. We will have to face the San Francisco 49ers and a much-improved Arizona Cardinals team. The St. Louis Rams are not even that bad either. Not going to be a cake walk.

In our own division, we have to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs twice and the Denver Broncos twice. Those are going to be some tough games to win. At least we get the Oakland Raiders twice. We better not sleep on them this time around.

After the schedule, I wonder if the conservative coaching of Mike McCoy will burn us at some point. There were a number of games that we should have won last season, that we didn’t show up for and didn’t play aggressive enough to win. We lost to the Oakland Raiders. We lost to the Washington Redskins. The Houston Texans. How many games will we give up? McCoy needs to get his team to show up and needs to get aggressive on the field with some of his decisions.

I fear the playcalling on the defensive side of the football. John Pagano has coached the defense for two seasons in a row and they have never been able to put a lot of pressure on quarterbacks and they tend to start out the season slowly. Will he be able to generate pressure on quarterbacks and can he get his secondary to play better? This defense needs to hit harder, tackle better and play aggressive.

I fear that we do not add any playmakers on the defensive side of the football and we have some flops in the draft. Tom Telesco made some good moves in his first draft, but will he be able to add some talent on the defensive side of the football. He has not made a good decision on personnel for the defense yet. Derek Cox. Manti Te’o is still a question mark. He let Aubrayo Franklin walk. Dwight Freeney. We need playmakers on the defensive side of the ball.

Fears for next season are injuries!! We are not that deep of a team quite yet. If we have injuries at key positions we could be exposed. Can we fix our secondary and get pressure on the QB? We looked a lot better towards the end of the season but can we keep that momentum and add to it? Plus as mentioned, our schedule is looking real tough right about now so any regression in play could be too much to overcome. Go Bolts!!

injuries. specifically to rivers. how blessed have we been to have a tough as nails qb? not trying to jinx us!

omg…. if rivers goes down… the season is done

I can’t add much to your article, Ernie. I agree with you. These are the real concerns–the things we are thinking and don’t voice much about during the season. I am real concerned with the play calling and the slow starts. I can’t take the excuses. Also, TT needs to crank it up some also. He should not have let Franklin walk. And Franklin is an FA this year… time he fix it. What you are worrying about, I would bet most of us are worried about. They have to get cranking a whole lot faster and take a seminar with Riverboat Ron and gamble a little.

RB , WR , NT , OLB , OG , LT. Those are my concerns , and can anybody stay healthy.

    Defense…

Dunlap suffered multiple concussions this year, no one knows how much longer Hardwick plays for and Rinehart is injury prone/FA and I believe Clary might get the axe also. We had injury issues upfront last year, if we can find a mauling DJ Fluker type guard to play right beside him or the opposite side who can play 16 games, our ball control plan will execute much easier. Add another dominant lineman or two because the front 7′s of the NFC West will bang up our line pretty well this year. We’ve already seen what our skill players on O can do. Maybe a late rounder to assume RM’s role when he’s hurt or cheap FA #2 WR. As for the rest of our draft and cap space, DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!

truth! that offensive line seems a bit shaky… looking forward to mike harris making a return and pushing for a job. Possibly at guard

I fear injures every year. We get too many serious injuries in training camp and that has to stop if we’re going to compete for a Super Bowl. My nightmare would be one of our young stars going down early. Knock on wood that doesn’t happen but I get disappointed every year.

    So many nightmare scenarios:
1 An Injured Rivers, season is over
2 Mathews always gets hurt, will they find someone who can cover for him
3 An injury to Allen, and the rest of the WR core doesn’t look good at all
4 Will they get any production from Floyd/Alexander in 2014, it sure doesn’t sound good.
5 The King leaves the building a whole lot, will they be able to squeeze 12-13 games out of him in 2014.
6 Will they find a NT, as of right now they don’t have a credible one
7 Will Pagano continue to miss use Liuget/Reyes and have them 2 gap, it sure looks like a waste of talent
8 Will the chargers resign Butler?, and get more out of Te’o.
9 Pass rush where is it coming from, will Freeney be even less coming of injury, can they find someone in the draft?
10 Cox has to play again because of cap problems, nightmare 2 only behind Rivers.

I would say that I’m scared of the schedule, except that we ALWAYS play better against the better teams. The pattern is so consistent it’s actually scary. So I’m not too worried about that. Injuries are always a problem, so we really have to boost our depth this offseason and get more of the “non-factor” players to become factors. I have lots of optimism for this next season though.

  • Kaipo

Ernie, I think Manti will be okay, he had a broken foot and recently had surgery … give him time he’ll be fine.

i think he will be fine also… doesn’t stop me from wondering though

  • Lee

the OL completely laying an egg… :(

All this stuff scares me, but nothing frightens me more than our cap situation, and what we’ll have to sacrifice to even make a smidgen of cap room.
