Are the Chargers Still In Need of A Safety?

Jan 7, 2013; Miami, FL, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish tight end Tyler Eifert (80) catches a pass against Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Ha

The topic of discussion for drafting a safety in the draft has picked up at Bolt Beat. Jahleel Addae is the top safety candidate on the roster to start and really doesn’t have much competition for the job. He finished off the season playing a majority of the snaps at the strong safety and took the job away from Marcus Gilchrist. If we don’t pick anyone up in the draft or free agency, then Addae will be the starter opposite of Eric Weddle.

He will be the newest starter opposite of Eric Weddle. We all know that has been a merry-go-round position for the team since Rodney Harrison was cut loose. It has been an Achilles heal for a long time. Eric Weddle has been great at his position, but he has no stability next to him.

Every season, there is a top safety that is available in the draft that could be a good option for the Chargers to pick up and we decide to pass on him or he gets picked up before we even get our shot. We likely wouldn’t have picked him up anyway. Last season it was Kenny Vaccaro. Before that it was Mark Barron. Who is it this year?

The top safety in this draft class isn’t quite as clear cut. Calvin Pryor and Deone Bucannon have been mentioned among the guys on the site, but the player that stands out to me is Hasean Clinton-Dix.

First off, we all know Telesco has a fetish for funny names. How funny is the name Clinton-Dix? Secondly, he prefers to be called HaHa. Can’t get funnier than that.

For real though, Clinton-Dix comes from the same program that brought us D.J. Fluker. Alabama knows how to produce talent. Clinton-Dix is always around the football and he would be awesome paired up next to Eric Weddle. Clinton-Dix is not your prototype strong safety though and would likely be considered a free safety, but it doesn’t even matter.

Add another playmaker in the secondary and we will be better off because of it. We can debate on which safety is best to pick up, but we should all agree that safety is still a need for this team. Even with Addae on the roster, there is nobody behind him that is worth a lick that should be starting back there.

Who would your choice for safety be in the draft? Pryor? Clinton-Dix? Bucannon?

I really to get the attention Haha get. I think it is because of is funny name and because he plays for Alabama. I think he barely worth a first round pick.
The safety I would want the Chargers to draft (if they decide to draft one) is Bucanon. I think he has the most potentiel of the group

  • Rob Base

Is this a trick question? Lol Bucannon is my draft pick.

Why is it unfathomable that addae can be a great safety? We have the coach for it. He developed 2-3 guys that were undrafted free agents into starters in Denver. N Taylor just needs a clean bill of health. Picking up another safety this season is a jerry jones move with his 3 te’s all early picks.

Addae didn’t beat out Gilchrist for the SS position. We started using Gilchrist elsewhere due to injuries and Addae filled his shoes nicely. We will not be drafting a safety in the first round. We already have Taylor and I believe Stuckey will be making his presence know on our D next season. And why would it not matter if we drafted a player that plays free safety if you think we actually need a SS? Safety isn’t always an easy position to just plug in on the opposite side.

Bucannon in the second could be very nice tough

Stuckey is not a good safety. He is the best special teamer on the roster but the dude will not learn how to play defense in one offseason. He is a serviceable plug-in for a few snaps at best.

  • CALiFORNiAkiD

We have our starting SS and his name is Jahleel Addae.

Honestly speaking, yes we do need a Safety. Assad was pretty solid for us, but behind him we have no one. Yes theirs Brandon Taylor but he is like our version of Derrick Rose. If we can pick up a S in the deft or even in free agency and have that player duke it out with Addae, then were fine. If Addae loses the starting job, then we have solid depth.

lol derrick rose is an MVP. Taylor is our greg oden

what about TJ Ward? via FA

Depth is very important. Telesco will find great football players to plug in and McCoy will coach them to be productive. Addae has the will to be better and that is what this team is looking for. Taylor will be fine to plug in when necessary seeing he is healthy. Safety in the draft would be nice to generate competition but I trust this Chargers regime to do exceptionally well in finding exactly what this team needs.

Louis Nix (because while all of our safeties began the season horribly they started to finally develop into a cohesive unit at the end of the year. Yes, we may need another safety back there but getting someone in the later rounds is a much better option at this moment). Picking up Louis NIx would also help our secondary out the way Star Loutelele helped out the Panthers defense.
