Chargers vs Seahawks: Reactions From the First Preseason Game

I was out at the game and didn’t get to see the video yet, so I am sure I will miss some things. Here are some of my reactions from Preseason Game 1.

First teams looked solid. Philip Rivers was kept clean and didn’t force his passes. He drove the team down the field on his first drive and chewed up a ton of clock. Ryan Mathews looked nice in his action and the guys look like they are doing alright with the new offense. I love the different formations that the offense runs out of. It is refreshing. stacked receivers and bunch formations all over the place.

I wish we were able to get the touchdown on that first drive. Settling for the field goal sucked. Danario Alexander would have been a great weapon in that area. We will have to find some players to make an impact in the red zone. We tried to get it to Malcom down there.

The defense was stout and Dwight Freeney looks like he can still provide a pass rush. He was quick on the outside and was able to put pressure on Russell Wilson. Didn’t get to see much of Manti Te’o on defense, but I think I remember he missed picking up a receiver in his zone. Ran right behind him.

FitzWilly, your boy Fozzy Bear looked pretty nice out there. I liked his effort, even though he didn’t have much help from his offensive line. Look forward to seeing him in the next couple of preseason games to see if he can make a push for a roster spot.

Charlie Whitehurst is trash. We can go on and on all day about this. Let’s just can him now. There were so many receivers that he just didn’t see open. He could have had Dan DePalma deep on one his first few plays. He overthrew that deep pass to Keenan Allen. Real ugly performance from Charlie.

Dan DePalma was nice. Didn’t blow me away, but nice. He dropped a pass that I thought he should have caught. We should give him a shot at special teams soon, since Richard Goodman looked like trash returning kicks.

Josh Johnson was a fail on all levels. Covering receivers and returning punts. He had all kinds of trouble just trying to field some punts.

The secondary needs some depth. We need to look for some help when people start getting cut.

Why the heck do we have two players with the number 44. I thought Chris Gronkowski was playing linebacker at one point.

Brad Sorensen looked nice in the pocket. He was able to move and shake and find receivers while he was on the move. Time to give him a shot on the 2nd team.

Why did Mike Willie clank a pass that was thrown right between the numbers? How am I supposed to root for that? Michael Hill? Same thing. Gotta step it up on when the cameras turn on.

I will check out the tape later to see what else I find.

Cut CBJ. Even if it leaves a rookie in the #2 spot, he’s got better stuff than Charlie.

    • Nick in PB

In this game, I totally agree. Whitehurst looked better last year in the preseason. He looked awful yesterday.

    • boltingindiego

let them switch spots on the depth chart b4 we cut cbj.

  • Rigo C Garcia

Two names that stood out to me: Tasker & Whittaker with promising talent and determination. This guys look to me like they want a spot in the roster and I really hope they can get it. DePalma looked OK but I believe he might be able to take Goodman’s job. Hope the guys can step their game up. Go Bolts!!

  • Nick in PB

I can say one thing about this game. The backups better get better. Whitehurst looked like more of a rookie than did Sorrenson. Held the ball way too long. There are a lot of young guys on our 2nd and 3rd teams. Many undrafted F/A. That means they either weren’t deemed as NFL ready or not talented enough. Some will improve. Some will not. When going against a talented, deep team like the Seahawks you see where your at and what I saw is that their depth was far superior to ours. The starters looked solid so that’s a good thing. It’ll be interesting to see what happens after the coaches evaluate this game.

    • Rigo C Garcia

      Spot ON!
I was going to edit my comment but you hit the nail on the head. Our depth needs some major improvements.

      • Nick in PB

I totally agree with both of those statements. AJ did a terrible job at replacing contract players. Either he drafted poorly at those spots or he ignored those spots. He drafted too many players with “potential” that never worked out. TT will do better. I already think that he’s going to see things down the road better than AJ.

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Courtesy of AJ, we have 0 depth/talent on roster…..big time fail…not to count the big name talent he let go w/o replacin, we haven’t built adequate depth for years….makes me jealous of teams like SF & Seattle…I remain hopeful SD will get there…

  • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

Well Hell…my DVR recorded at 6 minutes into the first quarter. So I gotta re-record the next showing on Sunday…I’ll take tour your word 4 it about the 1s……SD’s 2s looked bad OL, DL, about all of them….in comparison to the Seattle talent, we need lots of help. It shows how empty AJ left the cupboards.
TT has work to do. Catthouse was on a lot but also go burned….Tourek looked good. Not too many other plays or players stood out…..Bye CBJ…he blew…..As said in the film Pulp Fiction..”Check out the Brain on Brad”….kid was poised and can ball…..

    • Rigo C Garcia

      Nice pulp fiction quote

  • Cgoodness13

I got a epic Halloween costume idea….clipboard Jesus!!! That’s right I’m going to make a robe out of a Whitehurst jersey, buy a weave (wish I didn’t cut my hair recently), make a thorn crown, and take forever tossing out candy….none of you better steal my idea!!!

    • I_Bleed_Powder_Blue_801

carry a headset and clipboard to a game like that and u probably get on TV…..who really betrayed the Chargers last night??? Judas or Clip Board Jesus????ha ha….

      • Nick in PB

        hahaha… Good one!

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      need a pic!

    • Adam

Great idea…the only problem is buying whitehursts jersey

      • nativesandiegan

Might find one in a trashcan somewhere, probably exiting stadium

        • Adam

Haha yea there’s probably less than ten people that own one, and like 6 or 7 of them are him and his family

  • FitzWilly

    Nice write up Ernie
those were my thoughts from last nights game
I sure you’re right about Fozzy
definitely some potential there with the right guys in front of him :)

  • Gunnar Martin

Steve Williams had a strong showing. Goodman showed us no reason to keep him on the team and steal that last WR spot. Looks like DePalma has a better shot than I previously thought. Maybe we can keep Fozzy and have him return kicks (he did in college, and he’s pretty quick). Starters were all very solid. That’s probably the most important thing, especially about the O-line. We just need to stay away from the injuries and we should be fine. Also, Frank Beltre seemed to be all over making plays and what not. He could very well make the practice squad. Hopefully we will see more of what we will get in real games this season against the Bears.

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

The first team defense looked pretty good, when they first came out they looked like a impressive group but all I could think was “damn imagine if Ingram was out there”, Manti looked alittle buffer and not just Hawaiian thick I was hoping he would beef up a bit. Cbj needs to be cut and use that money to try to acquire some depth. Backup Oline is scary bad same with the secondary and linebackers they all looked lost. When’s the next game?

  • Team Norvless

All the pickups in the off season so far look like they can play.. CBJ should have hopped on the plane with Russell Wilson and company. Carroll looked like he was blitzing on almost every down even in the 4th quarter, almost as if he was trying to just make a statement for himself. Depth on our team is very, very scary… If any of the O Line goes down or PR, we will be picking in the top 10 next year..First team D looked solid, but again no back ups! TT Im sure will be looking too add some cuts from other teams.

  • JoseSD

Fozzy had two good runs other than that he was terrible the line didn’t help much but he was slow hitting the hole and was indecisive at times, 14 rushes for 38 yards isn’t good especially since he got more than 20 yards on just one run his average was about 2.8 a carry he was in there too long I wanted to see more from Hill or Baker

  • Sergio Quintero

I like the top 35 players on the roster, the bottom end is very concerning. The backup Oline/Dline left much to be desired, and the 3rd string corners not good.

So time to bring a backup corner & Defensive End, by checking the waiver wire.

I was really impressed by Steve Williams & Brad Sorensen nice late round picks by TT.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Picking up depth somewhere will be huge

      • Sergio Quintero

Seahawks annoucers were supposedly raving about their corners, maybe the chargers should pick up corner 5-6-7 from their roster.

  • Adam

You forgot to mention my boy Ladarius!

    • Stefanie Smith

He was good. I love that guy.

  • Stefanie Smith

What did everyone think about this Cattouse? He made some plays, I believe.

  • Stefanie Smith

It seemed like we had momentum, then we just collapsed as the evening wore on. It is going to make it easier for McCoy to release some because man, they were not so good. I am sure that TT and McCoy are watching film on the other teams and their camp players. There is still hope, but yeah, I admit it. I sort of got depressed when we lost, even if it was a preseason game.

Being positive: QB Sorensen is the new Chargers; perhaps they new regime will get smart and allow this new raw talent the time throughout THIS season to mature into the role of the Bolts franchise QB of the future.
The rest of the team – no comment. The real test will come on Monday Night Football in front of the nation when the regular (and real games) season begins.
