Do Any Of The Remaining Big Name Free Agents Fit The Chargers?

It has been an awesome and busy holiday, but this thing has gotten the back burner while I have been off galivanting around the city. My fault. Usually I have some stuff prepped while I am out, but this part of the offseason is death. Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and if you had to work today… at least it is the weekend now.

Let’s look at some of the free agents that are left unsigned and see if they could work out with the Chargers. Here is a list of some of the guys available.

John Abraham DE ATL – This would be awesome, but it won’t happen. I would love seeing Dwight Freeney and John Abraham chasing after the quarterbacks, but we don’t have the money to get this done. Abraham still wants to get paid. I think he still has a little bit left in the tank and could have been someone we looked at if we didn’t get Freeney.

Cedric Benson RB GB – There is a possibility that the Chargers could look to add another runningback onto the roster, but there are other guys on this list that could be a better fit over Benson.

Brandon Lloyd WR NE – Before we drafted Keenan Allen and before Danario Alexander signed his one year deal, this would have made some sense. He worked with Mike McCoy in Denver and we could have used some help at receiver. Now there isn’t any reason to bring him in.

Vonta Leach FB BAL – Some feel that LeRon McClain can do the job well enough, but I still think that adding the best fullback in the league could do wonders for the running game. Ryan Mathews would appreciate it. The demand doesn’t seem there, so we should sneak in and snag him.

Willis McGahee RB DEN – If we wanted to add a backup runningback to the roster, McGahee would make some sense. He has gone to the playoffs twice as the starting runningback for Mike McCoy and could be a physical veteran back to give Ryan Mathews a little push.

Brandon Moore G JETS – Why is he still available? I personally would rather have Moore on the roster over Jeromey Clary, but it seems that we are going to see what Clary can do for us. He is younger and could turn out to be a really good guard. Only time will tell. If only he played left guard.

Richard Seymour DT OAK – I would love this pickup, but Seymour isn’t going to take a pay cut. One of the concerns on the roster is the depth at defensive line. Seymour would be a huge improvement to that depth.

Eric Winston T KC – He is a solid right tackle, but we have DJ Fluker now. We drafted Fluker to be the main man at right tackle, so Winston makes no sense.

Michael Turner RB ATL – A back with San Diego ties and the fans still love him. Tom Telesco remembers him well. Turner tore up the Colts and Telesco has mentioned that moment before. Turner would be a short yardage back and would be the starter if Ryan Mathews were to go down with an injury. The signing makes sense.

    What up E-Dawg?
I would take Turner (not Norv) at the right price
On a side note, how do you feel about having weekly awards, when the season starts, for the MVP of the Bolts Org.
    ie players, coaches, management
We can call it “The Handy” ala HighVoltage/PakMan
    just axin :)

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

hahahaha. i am liking it. The Handy. Good call on that one. When people ask about the name, we will just have to point them in the direction of High Voltage aka PakMan. I dig it!

        Make it so #1 :)

  • Sergio Quintero

McGahee is the easy answer, knows the offense, still efective, Mathews always misses some time, and is better than Mathews at short yardage and goal line

    • Adam

It would have to be at a really good price though. I think he needs to sit in FA a little longer before we talk to him.

      • Nick in PB

Agreed! For our needs, none of the FA really strike me as a need or even better than what we have. I would take McGahee over Ronnie Brown though. We already have a 3rd down back in Woodhead so what will Brown’s role be? What we don’t have is a guy to split carries with Mathews unless the rookie Hill turns out to be a steal. Or Baker?

        • Adam

I think woodhead should get the job done.

  • Alter Ego

Willy…Willy – He’s our man…if he can’t do it – nobody can. I see McGahee being a great get – he has knowledge of the system and a relationship with McCoy as well as being a rock star back up to push glass shoulders (Mathews) to his healthy potential.

    • Adam

You always make the comment section look flashy. You put us all to shame…..

  • Cgoodness13

I’d prefer a CB if we sign anyone.

  • ECAVILLE/Ace of Spades

Vonta Leach has my vote. Let the two best fullbacks battle it out. This makes sense to me as a win win situation.

    • Adam

Mine too, except if we sign leach, we need to cut leron

      • Thomas Powell

McClain has no chance at 53 man roster anyhow saves 1.5 million by releasing him

        • Adam

Yep. I hope I’m wrong though

  • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Still think we need a strong safety or a cornerback. Turner isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

  • arnie

Honestly Ernie, i’d like to see what we have in camp, before The Chargers go off into FA agin. The Chargers have already paid heavily for the loss of Ingram and that should be the only reason to look at any FA at this point.
Let em’ play, see what happens.

  • Thomas Powell

LeRon McClain won’t make the 53 that 1 thing

I believe TT, the Real McCoy, and the rest of the staff know what they are doing IE: A few more tricks up they’re sleeves yet. Can’t wait to see what they pull off next. GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BruisingChargers

I believe TT and “The Real McCoy” and the “Whiz” have a handle on the situation and are looking at every way to improve the Chargers but, as most of them are on vacation (most as in the players.) I absolutely believe that our staff are staying abreast of the waiver wire etc.. In TT I trust! Get ready for an….AWESOME season Bolts Fans!!!!!!!!!!!! ” Shock and Awe” Lightning Bolts from Hell! No I am not “High” just “drunk” and amped for this season.Lol
