San Diego Chargers 53-man roster prediction 1.0

We have a month off till the San Diego Chargers get back to work. It is the boring time of the off-season. So let’s throw in the first predictions on the 53-man roster to spark some discussion.

Here we go:

Quarterbacks (3)
QB1 Philip Rivers
QB2 Charlie Whitehurst
QB3 Brad Sorensen

On the bubble/on the outs:
Mike Hermann gets the ax. Can’t keep 4 quarterbacks on the roster. I don’t remember the last time that we even have had 3 quarterbacks on the roster. If they can, they try to keep Hermann on the practice squad.

Runningbacks (6)
RB1 Ryan Mathews
RB2 Danny Woodhead
RB3 Ronnie Brown
RB4 Edwin Baker
FB1 LeRon McClain
FB2 Chris Gronkowski

On the bubble/on the outs:
Michael Hill or Edwin Baker? Baker or Hill? That is what it will probably come down to.

Tight Ends (3)
TE1 Antonio Gates
TE2 John Phillips
TE3 Ladarius Green

On the bubble/on the outs:
There is really no competition at this spot on the roster.

Wide Receivers (6)
WR1 Danario Alexander
WR2 Vincent Brown
WR3 Malcom Floyd
WR4 Keenan Allen
WR5 Robert Meachem
WR6 Eddie Royal

On the bubble/on the outs:
Richard Goodman is gone. Eddie Royal can handle all the return duties and is a bigger threat on offense. Plus Royal already has worked with Mike McCoy in Denver. Mike Willie also can’t crack the deep position. That is just too bad.

Offensive Linemen (9)
LT1 Max Starks
LG1 Chad Rinehart
C1 Nick Hardwick
RG1 Jeromey Clary
RT1 DJ Fluker
T/G King Dunlap
T/G Mike Harris
G Johnnie Troutman
G/C Rich Ohrnberger

On the bubble/on the outs:
This will be a tough spot to figure out. Nick Becton will be competing for a spot and there are players like Colin Baxter, Brandyn Dombrowski and Steve Schilling that could get a spot. Johnnie Troutman and Mike Harris will have to perform.

Defensive Linemen (6)
DE1 Corey Liuget
NT1 Cam Thomas
DE2 Kendall Reyes
NT2 Kwame Geathers
DE3 Jarius Wynn
DT3 Byron Jerideau

There are a ton of undrafted guys that are fighting for a roster spot. This is where the Chargers need to add some sort of depth or we will be trusting in an undrafted free agent to take some big time playing time if/when someone goes down.

Linebackers (9)
MLB1 Donald Butler
MLB2 Manti Te’o
OLB1 Dwight Freeney
OLB2 Jarret Johnson
OLB3 Larry English
OLB4 Tourek Williams
MLB3 DJ Smith
MLB4 Bront Bird
MLB5 Andrew Gachkar

On the bubble/on the outs:
Jonas Mouton? Thomas Keiser? I am not even sure if we keep the specialist Andrew Gachkar on the roster. We may need to keep an extra body on the defensive front or the secondary.

Secondary (8)
CB1 Derek Cox
CB2 Shareece Wright
FS1 Eric Weddle
SS1 Brandon Taylor
NB1 Marcus Gilchrist
CB3 Steve Williams
CB4 Greg Gatson
S Darrell Stuckey

On the bubble/on the outs:
Jahleel Addae might get cut because of the numbers game.

Special Teamers (3)
K Nick Novak
P Mike Scifres
LS Mike Windt

I hope you are wrong Sorenson is worthless. Total waste of a roster spot.

  • 619chargers4life

would hate to see Addae go.

    • Nick in PB

I agree… there are a couple of undrafted guys that should at least make the practice squad from the secondary. But Addae should at least stick around till the end.

      • tbell11

keep addae and get rid of gachkar

  • FitzWilly

What do you mean I didn’t make the cut?

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      haha

  • Gotcharged

Gatson is feeling the heat from Okoro and maybe Cromartie. We are looking to get taller in the secondary.

    • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

I heard Okoro was doing pretty well somewhere, as well. Can’t remember where though… on a Chargers.com blotscast, or a press conference, or something.

  • blu3ny3llow

I think Keiser over DJ Smith

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

was wondering on Keiser over someone. just wasnt sure who. I think smith will make the roster. maybe bird or gachkar will get the cut though

      • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

Depending on how well Tourek Williams does in camp, couldn’t you stash him on the PS, and have Keiser play.. assuming Keiser competes succesfully?

        • Nick in PB

Agree Peter! I’d hate to see Gachkar go. My roots are with Mizzou and he’s been solid when given an opportunity. Not spectacular, but solid. OK, I’m just rooting for the guy!

        • arnie

Tourek won’t make through waivers…bet on it.

          • tubbs45

            yeah NO way…

          • http://www.BoltBeat.com/ Peter Thompson

You’re probably right. However, just to play devil’s advocate, I thought the same thing about Baker last season. But, lo & behold, he was waived in September of 2012, and is still here this year. Williams is a sixth round pick, played offensive tackle before moving to DE, and is situational (by most folks accounts). Agreed, he seems more exciting, and pass rushers may be more of an “in demand” position.. also, he DID come close to breaking Antwan Barnes’ records in college. But, if he gets moved down to the PS squad, that probably means he isn’t ready yet. Having said that, I can see the Patriots, or Jets sniffing around and scooping him up… they seem to like our discarded players.

          • arnie

No doubt Peter, i could be completely wrong. But that is how young players get picked off. Being moved down the PS may also mean the Chargers have other needs, for the 53 man roster. Not necessarily that he isn’t ready. they may have wanted the young man on the special teams but the injury to Ingram changed this.

      • Dion Chin

Keiser is making the team for sure.

    • boltingindiego

keiser over bird or gack. dj will make the team as the back up mlb.

  • arnie

While i will concede that roylal makes the cut, i’m not so convinced. Ask yourself this, at the end of the day, can we trust royal to show up? this is the question that lead to the big lazy’s release. we all know what royal can do”when healthy”. but can the Chargers afford to turn the punt/return duties over to a rookie that is recovering from knee surgery, if royal goes down?
Goodman showed he was an asset, and always seemed a shoe string tackle away form breaking out. with better talent, and new direction, i’d like to see what the younger man can do.

    • tubbs45

Yeah Royal is a tough call, so much potential, such a weak hamstring! Goodman does have youth on his side and again so much potential, he is a good kick returner

      • arnie

hey the Chargers don’t need Devin Hester or, Josh Cribbs. they just need a guy that will be on the field and help the team get good field position.

  • shane

    david molk

    • Alter Ego

Good call Shane – Yeah – David Molk – he makes the squad too.

    • arnie

Excellent point. At some point, the Chargers need address a replacement for Hardwick.

  • Alter Ego

Your list is pretty good. I think we pick up McGahee and boot R Brown. I also think only two QBs and one FB. We keep one extra LB and DB. The defensive backs draw the eyeball though – are they warriors or wimps – time to put on the pads and find out.

    • Nick in PB

Paul, I think you are right about QB. Rivers hasn’t ever missed time (knocking on wood) so Sorrenson goes to the practice squad if he looks good in the preseason. No reason to keep 3 if the lead guy never get’s injured. Heck, he survived the past 2 years under assault! 1 FB tops, and Brown can go too. We don’t need 2 3rd down backs.

  • Gunnar Martin

I think they’re using Johnny Patrick as their reserve starter so far. I read that he’s being used as a nickel corner in place for Gilchrist, and was the replacement for Cox when he was out with a mild injury. He probably makes the roster in front of Gatson, Okoro, and Cromartie…

  • Gunnar Martin

Thank the heavens for the practice squad!!

  • tubbs45

I dont see them keeping 2 FBs… LeRon McClain / Chris Gronkowski, one is probably out. Though LeRon has proven to be an effective RB in the past.

    • arnie

you have a point. John Phillips also played FB for the cowboys, even though his position is a TE.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

true. if they have to choose one, i would go with McClain. But i don’t pay those contracts.

        • tubbs45

Arm chair GM’ing I could see 3 RBs and 2 FBs, but the better be good special team players. I just cant see keeping Royal or an extra FB and bailing on Goodman, last year avg 27.6 yrds per kick off, 2011 – 27.5 and a td…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

that is one of the reasons i kept mcclain. cuz he can be a back if we need him to be

  • jamfed

Clary makes the team? I really hope so… But I feel he’ll get the AX and get cut (or he must take a pay cut), Now I’m root’n for the guy (odd)

    • arnie

that is possible, Harris is still in an option at RT if Fluker moves inside. savings all the way around.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i didnt consider money at all when making the projections. He needs to take a pay cut. He might actually do it too

  • JoseSD

Id rather they keep only 2 qbs, and I doubt they’ll have 2 FBs, that opens up spots for 2 defensive players

  • Sergio Quintero

Way too many offensive players 27, most teams want to carry 26-27 defensive players to have flexibility with the variety of offenses’ one faces.

    Me personally only 4 RB’s, 5 WR’s.

Damn Ernie I have doing my 53 in pieces, it’s all in my head, but I get stuck in details.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

i can see us keeping 6 receivers, mainly because Royal would be a specialists mainly.

I could see us cutting another back for sure and a quarterback also

      • Sergio Quintero

I can’t keep Royal, as they say availability is a skill and dude just doesn’t have it.

6 RB’s is way to much, I can see 4 RB’s but no more.

  • TheSportsGizza

cattouse makes the squad at safety. you heard it here first!
