Chargers Can Build Up On That Defense

Defense. Defense. Defense.

Defense wins games. Defense wins championships. Is this really true today? Heck to the yeah!

We have to face Peyton Manning twice a year. The other quarterbacks in the division are much better than seasons past. We already have a good quarterback and an offense with potential. There definitely are issues that need to be cleaned up on offense, but our defense isn’t as strong as we sometimes think it is.

The defense has struggled getting off the field on 3rd down. The defense lacks big plays and the defense cannot create a pass rush. There are a lot of good young players on the defense, but it could use more playmakers.

We have added Derek Cox to upgrade the secondary, but not much else has happened to fix the issues. If anything, we have let a few players walk that were a big part of the defense.

Later this week, we could be building upon this defense by adding the playmakers that it needs. Tom Telesco is looking to add more team speed on the roster and the defense could definitely use it. Takeo Spikes was a thumper, but he wasn’t able to fly to the football anymore. He is now searching for a new home.

If the Chargers make a trade back in the draft and pick up a few picks, a player like Alec Ogletree could be a force in the middle for years to come. Mix Larry English in at outside linebacker and that whole group would be flying to the football. Donald Butler. English. Ogletree. Melvin Ingram.

If the Chargers choose to stick around with their 11th pick, they could add my newest man crush Kenny Vaccaro. Vaccaro and Eric Weddle in the secondary could be the best safety combo in the league. Speed to the football and both players are ball hawks. We definitely would be able to force more turnovers and give Philip shorter fields and more opportunities to score.

The depth at corner in this draft is deep. We could add a player like Leon McFadden and let him get a lot of opportunities in the nickel defense and he can challenge Shareece Wright for playing time.

Build up that defense. Let Philip know that he doesn’t have to try and win it all by himself. Build up that defense. Force turnovers. Build up that defense. Beat on Peyton Manning.

Build up that defense!

I really want to see glichrist prove to me he’s worthy to start next to cox.

      Maybe next to Weddle….

Taylor did play some CB in college and high school, if that’s where youre getting at.

        • blu3ny3llow

I meant Gilchrist playing SS next to Weddle…..he played safety in college

Not sure if you heard also… He got some reps there during the mini camp

          • blu3ny3llow

Yeah….maybe that’s why they didn’t sign another safety just yet…….makes more sense than signing Jammer n making him a SS

            Case closed, good job team!!!!

ogletree/ butler in the middle would be pretty sick tandem.

    • 619chargers4life

      i second and third that

I have liked him for months now, along with Vacarro.

      • boltingindiego

i love his coverage ability/ speed. plus we could trade down lol.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

He would be there with that trade down… And we could probably pick up a sick safety with a trade down like DJ Swearinger or something

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

They could get to the football so fast. A race to see who gets their first.

  • Jonah Lee

time to wreck some havoc!!!! hahahaha

I sure would not like to think that my pass rusher to compliment Melvin Ingram is not going to be Larry English or Jarret Johnson. I’m surprised people haven’t mentioned pass rusher as a major need.

Maybe the chargers re-sign Shaun Phillips as a stopgap, but I’m sure not comfortable with current set of players.

In the 2-3 round area drafting a Sio Moore, Jamie Collins would make feel whole lot better about the pass rush.

if we don’t nab vaccaro (or even if we do)- i’d like for us to bring jammer back as a safety- he’s lost a step but is smart, has chemistry with weddle and is a decent tackler imo.

i wouldnt mind having Jam I AM as an insurance policy in the secondary

Although agree with the general idea, first order of business is to get better up front on offense. IF the tackles are gone by the 11th pick, then try to trade down a few spots for more picks. Pick one of the guards, Warmack or Cooper, or the RT Fluker. Ideally with the trade we would pick up a 2nd round pick. Pick an Ogletree, Moore, Carradine, or other pass rusher who is still there. Use the next 2nd rounder for another OL.
