Now That The Dust Has Settled From Free Agency Day 1…

The dust is settling after day 1 in free agency and the San Diego Chargers didn’t do anything major. I have been saying that the Chargers would not go big into free agency for weeks now, but once the gates broke loose, I forget everything. I expected a surprise signing for some reason and when it didn’t happen there was a bit of a disappointment. It was just crazy watching everyone around us make things happen.

The Denver Broncos stole a player away from us! That one really hurt and added fuel to the fire. It would have been easier to swallow Vasquez heading to Indianapolis.

In the end, this is a marathon and we weren’t going to sprint out the starting blocks. The first day of free agency is for the teams that are going to toss the dough around and send big money to one player. The big names get the big money today and even some middle of the road guys find ways to rob teams. We didn’t have the luxury to go all-in on a player since we are more than one player away from being good again.

Instead, we brought in some guys that are going to contribute and add depth.

The painter put one stroke on the canvas and we were already screaming at him like he was doing it wrong. The whole picture is far from complete.

King Dunlap is not going to be a savior. We don’t even know if he is going to be a starter. We do know he can play multiple positions and can provide depth on a front line that has been straight crappy. Dunlap is still young and is big. I am sure he is better than guys that were on the roster last season.

There still are plenty of chess pieces that have to be moved. We didn’t overspend coming out of the gates and we have cash in our pockets after all the big time spenders are running thinner and thinner. After all the top notch free agents are signed, there will be bargains on some good free agents available.

Eric Winston still is in play. He still is an option for us at right tackle and could be signed. Brandon Moore is still available at guard. Jerraud Powers is coming to visit tomorrow. We are in prime position to take one of the guards in the draft.

While teams are making big time signings, other vets are feeling the wrath. Nnamdi Asomugha was let go. Karlos Dansby was set free. There are plenty of moves that still can be made. It’s not about who spends the big money, it’s about who uses it wisely.

It’s only day 1. Plenty of things still can/will happen. On to the next one…

One can only react to the facts, and its pretty clear for day one of free agency a 7 win team, got worse. There are plenty of players out there, but as the day closes, if you are honest as a fan those are the facts.

It’s true.. We lost day 1… But there will be more opportunities to make up for it

      • Sergio Quintero

Offseason is not a sprint, but losing Vazquez to the Broncos didn’t exactly give me a smile today. I still want to think this front office thinks it can get this team 3 wins better, and get back to the playoffs in 2013. And not blow it up, and go down to 4-5 wins.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

3 wins better… We should at least have gained one game with a new coach. But that might be a wash the first year… So, with nothing on roster yet and new coach, we are at -1 game from last year. This could be our grading scale for the offseason.

          • Sergio Quintero

In terms of the grading scale, works for me, at the end all teams are measured by W’s & L’s.

        • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

And yes… Losing Vasquez to the Colts really hurt!

          • Sergio Quintero

Sorry to make your day worse but he did sign with the AFC West champ broncos (I hate writing that!!)

          • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

I meant that… What the heck went through my head on that reply! Haha…
            Weird

You are tired.. lol. Thanks for posting today.

I’d love signing Winston. Lock in our RT and have Dunlap as the emergency LT this year if we don’t get Fisher/Johnson as we groom one for the season after. I’d still prefer Derek Cox to Powers forsure but a name is a name until the draft just give us SOMEONE.

  • Sergio Quintero

It certainly looks like the chargers will enter the draft with a massive hole at LT, and with no guarantee’s the top 3 LT make it to them. So what do you guys think of Armstead, Baktiari, Watson, if one of those guys is the LT.

There doesn’t seem to be a veteran they can plug and play at LT (Bryant McKinnie is the last one left), so what do you guys think will happen, hope Lane Johnson makes it to 11, trade up for Fisher, or take guard in the first and trust one of the second round guys at LT.

None of the second round options would make me comfortable with a pocket passer QB, if had to choose one I would take Watson.

So I’m hoping Johnson is there at 11, or to trade up for Fisher say around pick 6.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Hope for Johnson, but trade back if we can if he is not there

      • Sergio Quintero

If top 3 LT’s are gone, I would either take one of the stud Guards or Ziggy Ansah at 11. No guarantees that you can trade down.

        • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Imagine Ansah and Ingram/butler/lieg pass rush.

        • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

We might be set at guard if Greene or Hadnot are brought back.

          • Sergio Quintero

Not a big fan of Greene, might be better served with Brandon Moore rather than Greene, new Oline coach probably means new scheme, thus continuity is less attractive.

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

      Armstead would be great.

      • Sergio Quintero

The talent is there, probably will really struggle his rookie year, the jump in level of competition is fierce. And is not a finished product.

  • Rob Base

I know I jumped the gun and started acting like a negative nancy. Day 1 was quiet but can still have other opportunities just like you said. still can’t get over the Fozzy post though. :)

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

We all do it… That’s why we are crazy fans!

  • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

Tommorrows going to be better, King Dunlap will not be our top signing. Shouldn’t Mike Harris be let go now or is he a FA?

    • nate lew

Undrafted Rookie FA we had last year. Shouldn’t be a FA unless undrafted players are given different contracts.

      • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

He still is on the roster. He might be moved inside to guard… Or I like the idea of him moving to guard

  • JoseSD

Good rational article Ernie, Telesco actually did what he said he would not spend big, use free agency for depth and focus on the draft to rebuild. It seemed based on all the comments I was the only one not freaking out. They can’t afford one big marquee signing and this team needs more than one superstar signing to turn it around. Everyone was ready to burn Telesco at the stake after just 3 hours. This is gonna take at least two offseasons to get back the amount of talent the 2006 squad had

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

Oh that 2006 squad… So dang good

      • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

I’m really excited to watch our draft picks play this year and not riding the pine. Hopefully we get a nice compliment piece to the pass rush and Ingram turns out to be a beastly pass rusher (and we get Ansah)

        • JoseSD

I can’t wait to see what players like Mouton, Shareece Wright, Brandon Taylor, Ladarius Green, Vincent Brown and Johnnie Troutman can contribute. And hopefully this year’s rookies get to play and not just sit and watch

          • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

What was Mouton like in college?

          • Sergio Quintero

Safety early in his career, moved to linebacker I believe in his second season, put up good number his junior year, lead the big ten in tackles for a horrible Michigan defense as a senior. Tested poorly in combine running in the 4.8 range

          • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

            Like Mr. Legit!

          • tubbs45

While Molk was a center in college, but he also played guard, he is very strong and athletic. could be interesting…

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

And thank you.. Appreciate the compliment. Good job keeping a level head.

      • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

        Jose is pretty cool.

    • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

      I’m not trippin’.. lol.

  • tiiiiiiiiiiit11

O Line has to be addressed with at least 2 capable starters through free agency. Dunlap does not count, he is another Clary.

Anyone else think we should pursue S Michael Huff ???

    • TheReturnOfMrBlanks

      Hell ya

    • http://www.standupforkids.org blackroseMD1

Absolutely. I’m thinking he may be a little upset about being cut. What better way to get back at the Raiders than to sign with the Bolts?

  • Preston Niedert

Tomorrow will be a better day we can still sign RT eric winston, OG brandon moore, and CB derek cox or juarrad power and maybe RB shonn greene. Signing greene would help the chargers in two ways one. give a anothor RB to help carrie the load and should mathews go down take over until he comes back. Two he could sign for less money and he isn’t that injury prone maybe a game missed here or there but that’s a heck of a lot better that ryan mathews.

    • Sergio Quintero

I think they find the RB in the draft, but definitely like the OLine options you mention, if they can sign both Cox & Powers I would feel like this team has playoff potential.

  • Raymundo

Thanks for making me feel better. TT said he wasnt going to make a splash but I was hoping we’d keep Vasquez. Hopefully we can get OG Cooper in the draft.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Ahhhhhhh. Now. Didn’t that feel good?

I would have been really disappointed if they came out on day one, and spent half the money trying to sign (or retain) a contract that wasn’t worth it. This year may not be pretty.. but, it’s our year. Enjoy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

    OK…
If we re-sign Greene, or Hadnot, or both for cheap (both FA’s) the guard
position may be any combination of Greene, Hadnot, Troutman, Molk (both
of who are supposed to be good rookie players)… and possibly we could
have Warmack, or Cooper at 11…. Shoot.. people are even saying Clary
    could move left.
RT could look like Winston, Clary, Dunlap. (if we sign Winston away from our rival). Maybe Harris for depth?

LT isn’t pretty.. but it could be Gaither Dunlap, Fisher/Johnson.

    Translation = Someone we’re already paying to be a starter… someone who isn’t a
starter, but has NFL LT pass blocking experience… and a rookie with high
potential… also, Harris could double there for depth.

Best news of FAt? Hardwick hasn’t announced his retirement. WORD!!!!

    • Sergio Quintero

In terms of the guards, I expect one starter to come from free agency and another from the draft from round 2-4.

      • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

You don’t think they will go Warmack or Cooper in round 1? I think you might be right, but a lot of people are moving from the Lane Johnson pick, to the Warmack / Cooper pick. Especially now that the Titans are probably not in the market for Warmack anymore. Buffalo is missing two guards now though, and could pick Warmack before us.

        • Sergio Quintero

If Johnson is there they will probably sprint to podium, it gets interesting if all 3 LT’s are gone by then.

  • RussinSactown

OK, now that I listened to ESPN what the Chargers did yesterday makes sense. We don’t have Tampa Bay cap room and every deal on day one is at a premium. He seems to be emulating established teams like Pittsburgh and New England who hold back until they can get talent at a discount. That’s a more manageable approach even if it doesn’t give warm fuzzy feelings. We need to let it play out.

    • http://boltbeat.com/ Ernie Padaon

      truth!

    • http://www.facebook.com/lostkiara Stefanie Smith

Okay. I can buy that. I wore myself out yesterday with all the worrying and getting angry about losing Vasquez.

You and Ernie are the voices of reason. (Most of the time for Ernie.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/pete.spinning Pete Spinning

Now these were the kind of signings I was expecting to see. Not too flashy, but solid.

  • arnie

“…Where going to work with what we have…”

as i see it Telesco had a $8 million Dollar budget to start with. and that’s what they had to work with. they have been patient. cleared out the older. the over paid. an the players they could not afford to re-sign.

that tells me the young guys, will have more opportunities to play and start. FA are seen as “Temporary” solutions, until you develop the young players you drafted.

    Great article Ernie
