Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY SportsThe dust is settling after day 1 in free agency and the San Diego Chargers didn’t do anything major. I have been saying that the Chargers would not go big into free agency for weeks now, but once the gates broke loose, I forget everything. I expected a surprise signing for some reason and when it didn’t happen there was a bit of a disappointment. It was just crazy watching everyone around us make things happen.

The Denver Broncos stole a player away from us! That one really hurt and added fuel to the fire. It would have been easier to swallow Vasquez heading to Indianapolis.

In the end, this is a marathon and we weren’t going to sprint out the starting blocks. The first day of free agency is for the teams that are going to toss the dough around and send big money to one player. The big names get the big money today and even some middle of the road guys find ways to rob teams. We didn’t have the luxury to go all-in on a player since we are more than one player away from being good again.

Instead, we brought in some guys that are going to contribute and add depth.

The painter put one stroke on the canvas and we were already screaming at him like he was doing it wrong. The whole picture is far from complete.

King Dunlap is not going to be a savior. We don’t even know if he is going to be a starter. We do know he can play multiple positions and can provide depth on a front line that has been straight crappy. Dunlap is still young and is big. I am sure he is better than guys that were on the roster last season.

There still are plenty of chess pieces that have to be moved. We didn’t overspend coming out of the gates and we have cash in our pockets after all the big time spenders are running thinner and thinner. After all the top notch free agents are signed, there will be bargains on some good free agents available.

Eric Winston still is in play. He still is an option for us at right tackle and could be signed. Brandon Moore is still available at guard. Jerraud Powers is coming to visit tomorrow. We are in prime position to take one of the guards in the draft.

While teams are making big time signings, other vets are feeling the wrath. Nnamdi Asomugha was let go. Karlos Dansby was set free. There are plenty of moves that still can be made. It’s not about who spends the big money, it’s about who uses it wisely.

It’s only day 1. Plenty of things still can/will happen. On to the next one…
