What is Wrong With Philip Rivers?

I know that I have written this blog before.  Right?  But now that the San Diego Chargers have 47 turnovers in 25 games it is time to revisit this topic.  Because 40 of those turnovers were delivered by our quarterback, Philip Rivers.  Rivers has put up 32 interceptions and 8 lost fumbles in only two seasons.  Wait a minute, my math cannot be right.  Yup, according to it is.  In 2011 Philip had 20 INT’s plus the 12 he has already put up in 2012 with six weeks remaining.  The fumbles are nine in 2011 and six so far for 2012, but only eight of those 15 were lost.  By comparison, Rivers has put up 42 touchdowns in two years.  If you took away just half of those interceptions this would be a different kind of story.

Rivers is an all around nice guy and I would love to see him stay a Charger if he could get back to his 2008-2009 form.  I am not sure if what is going on with Rivers and the Chargers can even be fixed at this point.  I have watched the post game interviews and they all seem so surprised about the giant mistakes that were made.  How could they be surprised?  They have been making the same mistakes for months and now have added in blocked punts and direct throws to the other team.  Norv Turner doesn’t even know what he is talking about when he is interviewing.  It’s embarrassing to say the least.

So, back to Rivers and what could be wrong.  Here are some of my thoughts.  Please review and let me now your thoughts.

1.  Color Blind – Has he ever been tested?  Tampa Bay wears red and he threw the ball directly to the defender with no Charger player in sight.

2.  The Force is not strong with this one.  Maybe he is just done.  Quarterbacks do not last forever.  It is a brutal job and he might have hit the ground to many times to be able to perform as a starter.

3.  Norv Turner.  Could he be out there so pissed about the crappy play calling being sent in from Turner that he is just making mistakes?  Like when you drive and you are mad and you run over the curb or roll through a stop sign?

4.  He’s scared.  With Gaither out and the left side of the line practically inviting defenders to take a shot at Rivers he may just be afraid of getting knocked down again.

5.  He’s hurt.  His knee, his shoulder, concussion?  The Chargers do not have a good backup QB, so Rivers is going in hurt and clipboard Charlie is brushing his hair.

By the way, I went back to our BoltBeat blog archive. I did write on this before, a year and one month ago, you can read it here and wonder how many more years I will feel the need to write the same thing?

Something has got to change.

Hi Cindy, enjoy your writing but I don’t have an answer, Rivers is as much to blame as Norv.

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

      I agree.

  • Stefanie Smith

I think that your article is great. Every one of those considerations are valid. As to getting actual answers, we also know that the Chargers’ organization is not big on giving information to the fans or public. The whole thing is sad.

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

I agree. When they do talk to the public they like to offend us. “take a chill pill” These are not the Chargers I fell in love with.

time to start grooming a QB

  • James P Derrick

#17 lost his PRO BOWL Tackle & Guard….he hasn’t been the same since……it’s time to get a new GM & HC…QB too…however, the OLine will continue to be the heart of #17′s issues….until that is fixed, more of the same. Hardwick will be gone soon, may as well start grooming Molk…..see if he’s all that’s been hyped up to be…sad times for us fans now and ahead….

    • Pete Spinning

I hear ya. Hardwick had to think about coming back this year. Would you come back after this disgrace of a season? Retirement seems imminent. I can’t balme him, either. He’s the only one who has any real talent on the line. So far, anyway.

  • Lenzo Vaca

He is a family man. Football is not his number one priority plus, the testosterone he used to have
has diminished. Hes thinking more about makin hat mula too support all his kids n save enough up for their college funds. We need a young stud out there on the pitch.

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

Hmmm, maybe I should start compiling a list of young studs?

  • Saul Lopez

    Whats wrong with Rivers? Nothing.

The article you should write is What’s wrong with the O-Line.

    • Noel Golondrina

the o line doesn’t throw picks or fumble

      • arnie

And the O-line doesn’t protect, run block, or call the plays either?
bottom line, Qb must have “time” to make his reads, go through his progressions, and throw the ball. How does he get time, from the O-line. PR didn’t just become a moron QB overnight. if he is, he had help.

        • Saul Lopez

couldn’t of said it better myself

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

The o-line sure has issues. But Instead of adapting to their lack of blocking skill he is falling apart.

      • Saul Lopez

PR17 is not a mobile QB like RGlll or Rodgers. He needs a line to give him more than 2 seconds. Take a look at all his picks most of them come while on the run or underthrown because he can’t step into his throw. I almost wish they would sit him just so all you HATERS realize how good we have it at QB. Plenty of teams would love to have PR17 under center.

  • Noel Golondrina

coach rivers up…he needs to progress… if not, use him him only between the 20′s and have whitehurst fill in the red zone throwing to our 6’5″ wide receivers (his scrambling athletic ability can be an asset also)… more wildcat to ronnie brown, increase the running game touches to the three backs we have…….draft a mobile QB#1, with gruden as coach….OT#2 (who can play guard also), CB#3. ron rivera needs to return as DC with pagano back a LB coach. defense is inconsistent too.

  • arnie

Well at least i’m not the only broken record around here.
keep tellin’ the truth ChargerGirl Cindi, until they give us something else to talk about.

  • jb

Disagree cindy . Nope their is nothing wrong with Rivers. Its all coaching. U think Rivers will get away with all those picks with a coach like Marty, a Gruden , or a Cowher? As i can recall Marty fired a starting kicker (Ritchie) First game in to the season for kicking it out of bounds on a kickoff. Norv made Rivers get comfortable. Its like a Father not disciplining his child when they make a mistake and end up growing up to do whatever they want cause they can get away with it. And your asking if Rivers is done? Lets just say Elway won his first SB when he was 37. Can Rivers do the same? I really believe he can with the right coach. Chargers fans Rivers will be okay. Only if Norval leaves.

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

I hope he gets a chance to prove himself when Norv and AJ are out at seasons end.

  • John Crutchfield

PR is forcing his passes. On most of his INTs, it’s because there is a breakdown on the O-Line. Outside of Gaither, the only o-lineman we got in the draft was Troutman, and look where he’s at. If you give PR time, he’s going to make the throw. The o-line needs to be rebuilt. The secondary needs to be rebuilt too, but that’s a different matter.

    • ChargerGirl Cindi

We need to draft all O-line.
