My Defensive Thoughts For The Chargers 2012 Superbowl Run

I know, I know, You all are saying to yourselves Biggsy has been commenting but, no new articles! Well here you go. Today I will project my defensive thoughts for our 2012 Superbowl run.

Like I said in the Offensive article, I have huge expectations for this years Defense, and it all starts up front. Running the 3-4 D requires some special talent on the front line. Bringing back Antonio Garay is huge, he gets the push up the middle that we need, and with Cam Thomas backing him up we will be solid there. BTW Cam has some awesome shirts hitting the market soon, get one or 5! Now we know that Corey Liuget will start as one bookend, who will be the other? Well my brotha from another motha says Vaughn Martin will win the spot and have a good year, he did well for us last year and will continue to grow. However I believe Luis Castillo will regain the starting roll and not having that big paycheck will give him the drive to hold the blocks he needs to. I also think both Martin and Castillo will get a push from rookie Kendall Reyes, I can’t wait to see the competition there.

Now for our Linebackers, we have a plethora of them Shaun Phillips should return to form from injury. Antwan Barnes did very well last year with little rest. But we really had no one to set the edge and stop the run, that’s where Jarret Johnson comes in, he has been a run stopper in Baltimore for 9 years. Now we also picked up Melvin Ingram in the first round and I expect him to be a situational player like Phillips was a few years back. As for Larry English, if he is healthy will be a huge asset for the rotation. As for the inside linebackers, Donald Butler had a huge year and I expect the same this season. Takeo Spikes is getting a little long in the tooth but, not to worry his replacement is in the mix, I hope Jonas Mouton has the same type of year Butler had last year. He does have a little time to learn though. I know, I know you’re asking what about Darryl Gamble and Andrew Gachkar? Well they should both be in the mix but, mostly on special teams.

On to our Secondary, I bet you were all scared when Barron was taken at 7. Not me, we still have our stud Eric Weddle but who will be next to him? I myself like Darrell Stuckey for the position but, we brought in Atari Bigby and drafted Brandon Taylor. This will also be a high competition roster spot come August. Now I know our Cornerbacks got burned last season, Quentin Jammer had an off year and I hope he returns to form this season. And my boy Randy’s least favorite CB Antoine Cason had a few hick-ups last year, I myself am holding out hope he gets his act together this season. We do have a couple of kids waiting behind him in Marcus Gilchrist and Shareece Wright. They are both serviceable although Gilchrist has more experience and did well when he replaced Jammer last season but, I am not quite sold on Wright yet

. We all have to remember one thing when it comes to our secondary, if we can’t get the push up front ( like last year ) they will look horrible!

Well Boltheads, those are my thoughts. What do you think?

       @ShawnMakeEmSay
Sorry about the statement below…. lol.  We re-signed him on the cheap! Glad he’s back and I really hope he is healthy!

      • biggsybolt

@BoogaP If  he is healthy that D Line will have one hell of a rotation! Everyone fresh

  • JonVivian

I think they have the talent in place. If they can stay healthy, play smart and have some decent defensive game planning by the coaches, they can be top 5. I won’t be surprised if they are. I don’t know if you watched Ingrams workouts at the combines, but this guy athletically, speed, agility, he’s the shit and don’t be surprised if he’s defensive rookie of the year.

I’m very anxious to see MelvinIngram  in action on Aug 18 this guy intrigues me. so much that I’m going to the Bolt Beat Shop and buying myself a My Pet Melvin t-shirt!!!

Barron was never ever ever going to fall to us… and iam not sure they bring in bigisby and draft taylor if stuckey was progressing like they had hoped..

    • biggsybolt

@street Barron didn’t need to fall, the possibility of a trade was always there. And don’t forget the lockout hurt quite a few players last season, I see that as the main reason Stuckeys progress was stunted. The guy can straight lay the wood. That battle between the 3 will be very interesting once training camp starts.

I don’t agree about Takeo. He’s a great leader and he’s always around the ball. I’m expecting great things from this defense this season. Don’t be surprised if a couple of popular guys get cut. Just not enough room. I think we’re still lacking on the O line guard position so someone will have to go. I hate to say it but it might be a defensive player or two. I think the league needs to increase the roster by a couple of spots.

    • biggsybolt

@RMainwaring Absolutely increase the roster! It will serve a hand full of purposes.

Biggsy: Great look at the D. I think that Ingram will play a whole lot of DE honestly. I think the showing of Barnes, Phillips has still the mainman qualitys if they’ll use him as a pass rusher as well as dropping back. Those 3 rotating will cause a whole lot of trouble. Ingram will play plenty at LB too! The Corners and Safety has some depth now, with Pagano getting the go ahead to bring pressure I think the Secoundary plays a great year with alot more turnovers. That’s the key thing you left out. Does Pagano use his Phillips influence ( he knows the effect it had on offenses ) or will Turners gameplanning  throw the attack out for a safe gameplan. That is the whole key to this. Smith needs to stay out of Coaching, Turner needs to deligate the expertease to Pagano and Bisaccia as motivtors and keeping both sides aggressive as hell. Then the 1012 Superbowl run has a great-great Chance.

    • RMainwaring

@MikeTuck Delegate is right. Turner needs to keep his nose out of the defense and let the DC’s coach the defense.

    • biggsybolt

@MikeTuck Thanks Mike! The only reason I left out any coaching schemes was due to an article I put out the next day, I covered a little of what you’re talking about and @BoogaP discussed it to extent in his article. Hope to make it to town soon.

  • MikeTuck

Team means just that in the coaching ranks too! If Turner delegates some of his flawed coaching abilitys to Bisacci I think they roll. If he just gives all dutys to Pagano to run the defense and Pagano runs his D like Phillips which should have been his best experience in a defense running on all cylinders then our Defense will rise from the ashes to lead the league again.

  • MikeTuck

@biggsybolt The Superbowl is theirs to grab if the Defense is coached in a solid attack mode, playing to take the ball away and not to slow the offense down. It really depends on Pagano and Turner to gameplan to dominate.

    • biggsybolt

@MikeTuck i agree completely. I am hopeful that Pagano has the attack style D like Wade. I do k ow that he will have his own spin and it probably look more similar to Baltimore’s D and I won’t complain about that at all.
