NFL Mock Draft: Chargers Select Whitney Mercilus

Combines are done and we have seen some player movement in free agency. Time to put together another mock draft.

Each Bolt Beat mock draft is featured in the DC Pro Sports Report,, Sports Jabber, and mock draft databases. Each site keeps track of a huge number mock drafts all over the web.

Also be sure to check out NFL Mocks and With the First Pick for comprehensive NFL draft coverage year-round.

Here is my latest Mock Draft:

1. Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck
QB, Stanford
Peyton Manning gone and now the new Luck era begins.

2. Washington Redskins
Robert Griffin III
QB, Baylor
Trade 3 first round picks for the quarterback that they wanted

3. Minnesota Vikings
Matt Kalil
Time to fix up that offensive line and protect Christian Ponder

4. Cleveland Browns
Trent Richardson
RB, Alabama
Peyton Hillis is gone and need to fix the running game

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Morris Claiborne
They weren’t able to bring in Cortland Finnegan and had to settle for Eric Wright. They find their other corner here.

6. St. Louis Rams
Jonathan Martin
OT, Stanford
Any other team, I would have gone with Justin Blackmon, but for some reason think Jeff Fisher would go with -line first

7. Jacksonville Jaguars
Justin Blackmon
WR, Oklahoma State
The Jags need help at receiver in a bad way and they luck out with Blackmon falling to them.

8. Carolina Panthers
Melvin Ingram
DE, South Carolina
The Carolina Chargers pick up all the players we used to have or players we want, so they will take Ingram with this pick.

9. Miami Dolphins
Michael Floyd
WR, Notre Dame
After trading away Brandon Marshall, they are in serious need of a wide receiver

10. Buffalo Bills
Quinton Coples
DE, North Carolina
They signed Mario Williams, but still need help on the defensive side.

11. Kansas City Chiefs
David DeCastro
OG, Stanford
They just picked up an offensive tackle and now need to fill the interior of the line

12. Seattle Seahawks
Michael Brockers
They picked up Matt Flynn, so they don’t need to look Ryan Tannehill’s way. Now they go toward the defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals
Riley Reiff
OT, Iowa
Have to protect their golden quarterback Peyton Manning Kevin Kolb

14. Dallas Cowboys
Peter Konz
C, Wisconsin
They need interior lineman and select best center avaialable

15. Philadelphia Eagles
Luke Kuechly
LB, Boston College
Middle linebacker was their weakest spot last season and they select the tackling machine

16. New York Jets
Dontari Poe
DT, Memphis
His combine shot him up the draft and into Rex Ryan’s house

17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland)
Dre Kirkpatrick
CB, Alabama
They needed to upgrade their secondary and pick up Kirkpatrick

18. San Diego Chargers
Whitney Mercilus
DE/OLB, Illinois
The choice will be between Courtney Upshaw, Whitney Mercilus and Nick Perry and we take the one-year wonder.

19. Chicago Bears
Courtney Upshaw
LB, Alabama
One of the best players on the board is Upshaw and they can’t let him slide any further
20. Tennessee Titans
Andre Branch
DE/OLB, Clemson
More pass rush

21. Cincinnati Bengals
Mark Barron
S, Alabama
They bring in both guys from the Alabama secondary onto their roster

22. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta)
Kendall Wright
WR, Baylor
Adding another fast receiver onto the roster

23. Detroit Lions
Janoris Jenkins
CB, Northern Alabama
They lost Eric Wright and need to fill the hole in the secondary

24. Pittsburgh Steelers
Nick Perry
Perry gets to have his hand on the ground and pass rushing for the Steelers

25. Denver Broncos
Dwayne Allen
TE, Clemson
Need to get more weapons for Peyton

26. Houston Texans
Fletcher Cox
DT, Mississippi State
I just can’t help but think that Wade Phillips will get them to select more defense

27. New England Patriots (from New Orleans)
Devon Still
DL, Penn State
Defense, defense, defense!! That’s what their draft will be about.

28. Green Bay Packers
Jerel Worthy
DT, Michigan State
Need more help on their defensive front

29. Baltimore Ravens
Dont’a Hightower
LB, Alabama
Looking to bring some youth to the defense

30. San Francisco 49ers
Mike Adams
OT, Ohio State
Gotta protect Peyton… wait did that alredy

31. New England Patriots
Alfonzo Dennard
CB, Nebraska
Still defense, defense, defense

23. New York Giants
David Wilson
RB, Virginia Tech
Their fat running back is gone and they need depth behind Ahmad Bradshaw

Based on what we have done in free agency (so far), we will need to go heavy on the defensive side of the ball with this draft. First we need to pick up that pass rusher that AJ prioritized in the off-season, then we need to work on that secondary.

Whitney Mercilus might has been known as a one-year wonder, but he looks like a freak athlete and looks like he can continue his success in the NFL. He has a lot of speed off the edge and has great balance to get to the quarterback.

He could work in the mix on the outside with Jarret Johnson, Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips. Eventually, he could take over SP’s spot on the roster. He could be thrown on the field during passing downs and asked to chase the quarterback. Barnes, Phillips and Mercilus all on the field at the same time could be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

im willing to bet on the one year wonder. i may be wrong and if so please correct me but wasnt last year Whitney’s first year as a true starter? I like Whitney and would love to see him in the blue and gold and or Upshaw and Perry. You know me. im praying for a pass rusher lol

    • epadaon

@619chargers4life he only started a few games before last season… 2010 he started 2 games, then became full-time starter in 2011

      • 619chargers4life

@epadaon i thought so. i hope we do snatch him up. if not then i would like to see perry come here only cuz he went to USC and if both those two are gone then Upshaw.

  • A_Eme_O_Ere

If we don’t sign Garay AJ will have to draft a DT in the first round… AND THAT WOULD SUCK!
But then I would prefer to get Barron or Smith in the first round and draft McClellin in the 2nd.

    • epadaon

@A_Eme_O_Ere I really hope we get Garay back

    • zeus619

@A_Eme_O_Ere C.Thomas has developed into a solid nose tackle, interested to see what he does as the new starter. Not to worried about NT.

  • the gorn

If all those OLBs fall that much, I would trade down.  We’re going to need picks if AJ is going to move up to pick Harrison Smith in the 2nd round.  AJ’s gushing bromance with Smith is going to mean we’re going to burn alot of picks.  Not a good thing when you need bodies to rebuild the team.

    • epadaon

@the gorn i know what you mean… not understanding why they are so outward about their love for harrison smith.

      • the gorn

@epadaon The problem is when AJ falls in love, he lets everyone know about it.
I know some people are saying that this worked when AJ got Weddell.  But, what about the time we got burned going after giving up alot of picks for Hester?  Also, when we went after Weddell we had a deep roster so burning a few picks to get a player that stuck isn’t so bad.  Now, we don’t have a deep roster.

        • epadaon

@the gorn I hope we don’t lose too many picks to move up for smith…might as well have other targets just n case

    • zeus619

@the gorn The chargers have a huge need at SS, drafting H.Smith would help us solidify our secondary. Since we are in a weird spot in the draft we should trade down unless a prospect like Decastro or Rieff fall to us. Getting more picks will be AJ’s focus in the draft, this maybe his last year so he maybe willing to use next year picks to move around in the draft.

      • epadaon

@zeus619  @the trading down sounds like an awesome thing, but we would have to find a partner and we would have to see what we get from it. We would still want to be in the first and be able to pick Smith up.. and we still want a pass rusher.
it might be best to try and trade up in the second

  • MikeTuck

Alex Ramirez on Bleacher report has listed a 7 round chargers selection that I believe is the best I’ve seen to date. it addresses all needs and with quality people. i hope it’s close to the real thing RD 1. Nick Perry USC   Rd 2  Harrison Smith SS ND  RD 3  Tony Bergstrom OL Utah  RD 4  Trumaine Johnson CB Montana  RD5 Ronnie Hillman SDST  RD 6 Mike Daniels DT  IO  RD 7  Ryan Miller UC
If this was at all possible that is a darn good group to draft. The only thing is if they could get a QB in undrafted free agency.

  • RussellGrant

Um, why would we take Mercillus if Upshaw or Perry is on the board?  Does a body of work mean anything?

    • epadaon

@RussellGrant because its AJ.. and really thats all it is… would that move surprise you? having all 3 available and we go for the guy with the “potential”? just sounds like AJ

    • zeus619

@RussellGrant J.Pierre-Paul didn’t have a huge body of work either. Mercilus is a good prospect that should get a good look from chargers. However I do agree with u on Upshaw, I would him ahead of mercilus.

  • A_Eme_O_Ere

Maybe AJ isn’t worrying about Garay because he thinks highly of Brandon Thompson like I do.

  • zeus619

Peter Konz is a solid guard/center prospect. We should get an upgrade on the o-line. If D.DeCastro is there then we should pull the trigger. Unsure about Greene as the starter. Chargers could trade down and pick up more picks and select P.Konz toward the end of the draft.

  • MikeTuck

Like I’ve said , I feel that we should pickup Castro or Perry, stay with the Pack 12 or the smaller western divisions, they’ve got some really good players. I’m really thinking if we can get Castro in the first and Wagner ILB Utah St. is available in the 2nd get him. A tackling machine is exactly what we could use along side butler. Then the Safety out of Montana and in three rounds we’ve addressed our defense well.
