Potential breakouts in LA Chargers training camp: LB Amen Ogbongbemiga

If you're looking for an undrafted free agent to make the team this year, linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga might be the best bet. Part of the reason is strictly that linebacker is far from a deep position for the LA Chargers.

Kenneth Murray, Kyzir White, and Drue Tranquill are likely locks to make the team, but there's much less certainty past those names if the Chargers are going to carry five or six linebackers (rookie Nick Niemann likely makes the roster as well).

Per The Draft Network, Ogbongbemiga got the second highest 2021 UDFA salary on the Chargers. While not the most important metric, the Chargers have shown that they do value him over most of their other UDFA/Spring League signings. Only Louisville DT Jared Goldwire got more on the open market with the team.

The Chargers were infamously dead last in most special teams metrics last year. On the complete polar opposite of that, Ogbongbemiga logged 513 quality special teams ace snaps:

In 2018, Ogbongbemiga won Big 12 special teams player of the week following a crucial punt block that led Oklahoma State to an upset win over Boise State. His athleticism, size, and surefire tackling make him a pretty great asset to any team trying to bolster their unit.

Niemann and Ogbongbemiga will have to show some defensive prowess during the preseason, but how they do on special teams will be a clear determining factor as to whether they make the roster or not. Austin Ekeler's extra effort in that phase of the game back in 2017 was one of the reasons he made the team.
