Potential breakouts in LA Chargers training camp: DT Christian Covington

Christian Covington is a Charger that I think is flying under the radar heading into camp. Most fans were pleased with his signing at the time to bolster the depth, but I'm not sure fans realize how important he's going to be. The departure of Damion Square effectively locks Covington in as the rotational tackle to complement Joseph, Jerry Tillery, and Justin Jones.

Covington set a career-high last year with 40 tackles as he was solid in the run game. The issue for him was mostly the quality of the line he was playing on. The last two seasons have seen Covington's pass-rushing analytical stats dip due to playing on some bad lines with Dallas and Cincinnati.

I wouldn't necessarily say that this Chargers' DL/DE group is going to be as good as the Texans' Jadaveon Clowney-J.J. Watt line, but it could be close. Joey Bosa is in the prime of his career while Uchenna Nwosu might take another step forward. Joseph was still himself last year and now the Bolts have Brandon Staley to scheme up some 1 on 1 matchups.

Covington is also the second biggest DT on the line after Joseph. The team and the fans will notice his presence on the interior. Standing at 6'3" 300 pounds, don't be surprised if he draws some comparisons to a "mobile home" or "walking refrigerator" like Joseph did last year.
