Safeties: Derwin James Jr., Nasir Adderley, Mark Webb, Alohi Gilman (4)
Derwin James Jr. hasn't played all preseason in the interest of keeping him healthy. He's had some awesome moments in practice though, like his defense against George Kittle in the Niners' scrimmage:
There are no real surprises with this group. Nasir Adderley was recently activated off of the COVID-19 list after being a close contact to the aforementioned Smith, so he'll be on the original 53-man roster for sure.
Alohi Gilman and Mark Webb will both make the team with how often they'll have to play. Gilman will enter the year as a core special teamer while Webb could come in for a few defensive plays here and there. Some would argue that the Chargers waited too long to draft a safety this year, but Webb will get some work as a result of his selection.
Charlotte's Ben DeLuca misses the cut after having a few standout moments this training camp as a tackler and playmaker. It wouldn't surprise me if he was a practice squad candidate along with quite a few other Chargers' defensive cuts. There are simply too many bodies in the way for the undrafted DeLuca to make the 53-man roster.
