Chase Daniel will win the LA Chargers backup quarterback job
Never did I think that the debate for who the backup quarterback should be would be as contentious as it has become, especially when the LA Chargers have one of the very best young quarterbacks in the league in Justin Herbert.
But alas, it has become a legitimate debate between the grizzled veteran in Chase Daniel and the dynamic preseason quarterback, Easton Stick. Carrying three quarterbacks on the roster is an option and something they did last season, but is not the most common thing to do.
It really does not matter all that much who wins the job as Justin Herbert getting hurt would derail the playoff chances anyway. As good as Stick has looked in the preseason, he is not piloting the Chargers to the playoffs.
Stick has been the better of the two quarterbacks which has led many Charger fans to be in favor of him winning the job. However, the value that Daniel brings off the field as a veteran mentor for Herbert is larger than the potential value Stick would bring in case of emergency.
I know, why don't the Chargers just hire Daniel to be a coach then? I get that logic, but having a veteran to lean on in situations and connect with is massive for a young quarterback. Daniel really has a grip on this Saints-style offense and Herbert can be coached up a lot by the coaches but none of them know what its like to actually execute it as the quarterback of an NFL team.
For that reason, unless Stick has an absolutely incredible game and Daniel looks absolutely awful, I think it is already a foregone conclusion that Daniel wins the job.
Hopefully it won't matter too much either way.
