2. Kansas City Chiefs: Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, Daniel Sorenson, Armani Watts
If Derwin James can stay healthy and play at least 14 games and Nasir Adderley is 75% of what we think he can be next season then the LA Chargers will rank ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs. With neither of those things guaranteed, Kansas City edges out the Chargers.
The Chiefs are headlined by Tyrann Mathieu, who should have already entered the stage where he regresses but has not yet. He has arguably been the most important player on the Chiefs' defense the last two years, earning to All-Pro nods in the process.
Mathieu is versatile like James and has been able to stay on the field. The ceiling of James is higher, especially considering how old both safeties are, but we cannot discount how good the Honeybadger has been the last two seasons.
Juan Thornhill has been serviceable thus far in his career. He did take a step back last season but he definitely has been better than Adderley thus far and they are both second-round picks from 2019.
I like Daniel Sorenson a lot more than I like any of the safeties not named James or Adderley in LA and that gives the Chiefs the advantage when it comes to depth as well. Kansas City has three guys that they can use, the Chargers, unless I am really wrong about Gilman, only have two.
