2. Derwin James

Justin Herbert is the quarterback of the offense and is one of the best in the league to do it and Derwin James is essentially the quarterback of the defense and is also one of the best in the league to do it. James has not had a fully healthy season since 2018 and man, how much the Chargers missed him as he returned and played at an elite level yet again.

James is all over the field and is taking on the most responsibilities of any player on the defense. Even when he is not directly involved in the play he has a massive impact on the defensive side of the football and he truly is the glue that holds the entire defense together.

Just look what happened when Derwin got hurt. Derwin was containing Travis Kelce in the Thursday Night Football matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs and the second that James went down Kelce started to make big plays. Kelce is the reason why the Chiefs won that game and he only had a good game because Derwin got hurt.

Then Derwin did not play against Houston and the defense was absolutely horrendous. Granted, the Chargers were dealing with a lot of issues on the defensive side of the ball, but not having James was the biggest issue that the team had.

Then he returns against Denver and has yet another great game. He is the most important player on the defensive side of the football so he has to be ranked second on this list.
