With the 17th overall pick in this LA Chargers mock draft, the Bolts select Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State
If the LA Chargers are unable to re-sign Mike Williams this offseason then the most likely first-round pick has to be a wide receiver. Unless the team lucks out with Davante Adams, the Bolts are not going to be able to replace Williams in free agency. I would much rather see the team draft a first-round receiver and spend on other positions (like edge rusher and corner) than the team sign Michael Gallup for $12 million a year.
Who the Chargers pick at 17 can really be whoever you like the most. There were several options on this simulation and so was my no. 1 option, Garrett Wilson. It does not have to be Wilson, though. It could be Drake London from USC, Jameson Williams from Alabama, Treylon Burks from Arkansas, the Chargers are going to have options.
Wilson is my top choice and top receiver in the draft because of dangerous he can be with the football in his hands. It was not long ago that Charger fans were complaining about the team's inability to garner consistent separation and the lack of having a true YAC threat on the offense.
Wilson is exactly that. He is someone who can live underneath in short routes, simply utilizing his speed and athleticism in the slot. Once he gets the ball in his hands, he is a threat to break every play into a massive play with his open-field ability and speed.
You could make the case that the Chargers should target an outside receiver to replace Williams but I think Wilson would do just fine. He would still be the WR2 in terms of targets behind Keenan Allen and it would allow Joshua Palmer to operate more as the X receiver, where he can thrive.
