Chargers mock draft round 2: Derick Hall, EDGE, Auburn

The LA Chargers absolutely have to take an edge rusher in the first two rounds and if Smith is not on the board at 21 then it makes sense to wait until round two. There are several quality edge rushers that should be available to the Chargers in the second round with Derick Hall being one of them.

Los Angeles needs someone who can provide rotational depth at the edge in 2023 with the intent of replacing Khalil Mack full-time in 2024 and beyond. While Mack was restructured, that does not remove the chance of him being cut next year. In fact, the Chargers are more likely to cut Mack with how many huge cap hits there are for the 2024 season.

Hall is a good option to get in the room right away to learn from two of the best edge rushers in the sport. He is built for a defense like the Chargers where he can be an outside linebacker as opposed to a defensive end and he has the traits to succeed right away.

He is a bit raw in his pass-rushing technique but his athleticism and strength are naturally going to carry him to some output. At the very least, it will make him a solid run defender as early as year one as he works on his pass-rush technique into year two and beyond.
