Nasir Adderley and Raheem Layne
The biggest story at the safety position during Chargers training camp is Derwin James' current hold-in as he works out a contract extension with the team. Derwin's absence has allowed other players to step up during camp thus far with there being a lot of talent at the safety position.
Nasir Adderley has stepped up as the leader of the safety room with James out and he showed up to play on Sunday. Adderley was flying around the field and was arguably the most impactful player on the defensive end.
Everyone who attended the scrimmage was raving about Adderley, who appears to have taken another step up after having a really promising sophomore year in 2021.
On the other end of the depth chart is Raheem Layne, who is going to make it very hard for the Chargers when they make roster decisions. The undrafted free agent has been turning heads during camp and he continued his strong fight for a roster spot with a strong showing in the scrimmage.
Layne has a really good shot of making the roster if he keeps this up because of the value he adds on special teams. While his coverage ability has been extremely promising, his ability on special teams coverage is what gets an undrafted free agent like him on a roster.
