4 questions we hope are answered during Chargers training camp scrimmage

3. What is Michael Davis' role going to look like in the secondary?
Michael Davis is an interesting player to watch on the LA Chargers during training camp and preseason. Davis was really starting to make strides as an impact corner, signed an extension with the team and then took a step back in his first season with Brandon Staley.
Now Davis' role on the defense is hard to define. J.C. Jackson is obviously the CB1 on the roster and all signs are pointing to Asante Samuel Jr. being the CB2. Bryce Callahan has really stood out during camp and would probably get more slot snaps than Davis, leaving him in a gray area without a defined role.
Defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill did comment that the team needs to figure out a way to get different guys on the field in different packages, which indicates that the coaching staff is still trying to find out the answer to this question as well.
#Chargers DC Renaldo Hill on CB Michael Davis: “We know Mike is a talented guy and we gotta find a way to get guys on the field in different packages. He did slide inside in some DIME (6 DB’s) today. We’re just gonna keep this thing going and see how it develops.”

Davis has had moments in camp that have been really good but he has also had moments where he is obviously falling behind. The traits have always been there with his size and speed and it will be interesting to see how the team moves him around the secondary, if at all, during this scrimmage.
Brandon Staley's defense is built on versatility and having a deep cornerback room and it is imperative to the team's success that Davis can buy into this vision and make a positive impact on the secondary. Hopefully, that starts with a strong showing during this scrimmage.
