3. Deane Leonard
The LA Chargers needed to add depth at cornerback this offseason and that is what the team did with two of its last three picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Los Angeles took Ja'Sir Taylor and Deane Leonard on day three of the draft with the hopes of developing the two prospects.
While Taylor and Leonard were not elite prospects, they had the traits that Brandon Staley loves in a cornerback. They are both extremely athletic and showcased fundamental ball skills that can be worked on at the next level. With some NFL coaching, the hope was that they could be develop into legitimate NFL players with time.
Leonard has seemingly accelerated that process as he has really stood out in his first week of camp. The seventh-round pick has looked far from that as he has shown that he is much farther along than perhaps we realized.
Of course, it is just one week and I would not then expect Leonard to play an every-down role on the Chargers. However, he is already showing in just one week that he can be a valuable rotational corner that comes in on passing downs in nickel and dime looks.
If Leonard is someone who plays 30% of defensive snaps and makes a handful of big plays in his rookie season that would be a huge win for the Chargers.
