3. Marquez Callaway

If I had to bet on one receiver that the Chargers would end up trading for my first pick would be Marquez Callaway. Brandon Staley has been all about connections and getting players who are familiar with the things that the team does.

Callaway is coming from the New Orleans Saints, which is where offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi came from. Lombardi might not last the rest of the season as the OC but right now, it is his job and Staley will prefer to bring in someone who has some familiarity with this system.

The Saints have every reason to trade Callaway as well. The one promising young receiver has fallen down the depth chart with the additions that the team made last offseason. Plus, New Orleans really is not in a great spot with a 2-5 record, so if they can get a pick for someone who they are not utilizing then that is smart football.

Callaway is a restricted free agent after the season and the Saints do not really have the means to bring him back anyway. It might even turn into a situation where they do not tender him and let him walk for free. Might as well get the draft capital sooner (even if it is only a seventh-round pick) by making a trade.

MUST-READ: Promising rookies the Chargers could have drafted in 2022

Callaway does not have the blazing speed that fans want to see but that might make him more realistic for the team. He is still a great deep-ball threat and would be a huge addition to an offense that has lost its two best deep-ball options in Guyton and Williams.
