3. Kenneth Murray

Kenneth Murray is also coming off of a really bad 2021 season with the Chargers. However, instead of earning it like Davis, Murray did not play for most of camp and the preseason as he was nursing an ankle that he had surgery on in the offseason.

Since Murray is a first-round pick from just two years ago and with the team not invested in linebacker much, the former Oklahoma Sooner is definitely going to get the starting gig and is going to get plenty of chances in this defense.

The hope for Chargers fans is that Murray can have the same kind of third-year leap that Nasir Adderley had last season. Murray did have to learn an entirely new defense last year and was playing for most of the year with a bum ankle. With an entire offseason behind him and a better ankle, Murray no longer has any excuses.

The Chargers have options if Murray does not play well. Drue Tranquill is going to be starting alongside Murray but he could quickly move to LB1 on the depth chart if he isn't already. Behind Murray is the likes of Troy Reeder and Kyle Van Noy, who are the two most likely players to start in place of Murray if he falters.

Linebacker is the least important position in Staley's defensive scheme, especially if the run defense up front is as good as advertised this season. If the interior defensive line ends up playing well the Chargers just need Murray to play decent man coverage against tight ends and running backs on early downs.

As long as he can utilize his athleticism to do that and grows in his ability to recognize plays then Murray can keep his starting job. If not, LA should quickly move on and lessen his role.
