The LA Chargers' 53-man roster is officially set and the team boasts one of the most talented rosters in the entire NFL. While paper does not play football games, on paper, the Chargers should be one of just a few true contenders this season.
A true contender doesn't just have a great roster but it also adjusts as the season goes along to maximize the talent on the field. While most of the starting spots are locked up in LA, there are several players that could end up getting demoted in favor of someone more talented.
The Chargers should not run away from change if there is someone better for the job on the depth chart. Instead, the coaching staff should be embracing it.
Here are 3 Chargers starters who could eventually be demoted this season:
1. Trey Pipkins
Trey Pipkins won out the starting right tackle in training camp and the preseason and while he has looked better than he did in the past, there are still some concerns at the position. Right tackle is very obviously the biggest hole in the offense as the Chargers are hoping to just get league-average play out of Pipkins.
It will be interesting to see how he holds up over the course of the regular season, especially with him getting tested right away in Week 1 with Maxx Crosby. Crosby doesn't want any of that Rashawn Slater smoke, so he definitely will end up taking most of his reps against Pipkins.
The good thing for Pipkins (and bad thing for the Chargers) is that Storm Norton is not that great of an option either so Pipkins would have to play really poorly for the team to make a change at starting right tackle.
However, there is always the potential for a trade to become possible during the season or for the Chargers to get external help in some capacity, so Pipkins still has to prove his worth as a starter every week.
