2. Larry Rountree
The running back depth behind Austin Ekeler was horrible last season and finding out the pecking order of the running back room was an imperative goal for the Chargers in training camp. While there is still a long way to go, the order of that depth chart is taking shape.
Isaiah Spiller was always expected to be the team's RB2 after he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The first week-plus of training camp has only confirmed that as he has gotten many more looks than the other backs, including looks with the first-team offense.
However, in a shocking twist, it has been Joshua Kelley who has impressed more in camp thus far. Kelley got some pretty big praise from Ekeler for his explosiveness and if the Chargers were to make the roster today, he would probably get the RB3 job over Rountree.
This is shocking considering Kelley was drafted in 2020 while Rountree was a Brandon Staley selection. Typically head coaches will favor the guy that they drafted but if Kelley is the better player that is the direction they should go.
The biggest deciding factor for this specific roster battle will be the preseason. Seeing how Kelley and Rountree both respond to actual snaps against other teams will be extremely telling. As it stands right now, though, Rountree is falling behind.
