Raheem Layne, S
There are quite a few bodies at the safety position and that would have made it tough for Raheem Layne to make the roster as is. However, if the Chargers were not using that roster spot on Easton Stick then the team very well could have carried another defensive back to add depth and versatility to the room.
To be fair, I personally predicted Layne to make the 53-man roster this season but I am definitely on an island. Most are predicting the likes of Mark Webb and co. to make the roster over Layne, which is definitely a possibility and probably more likely. However, with Layne's special team value, it is hard to see the team simply letting him go.
But the Chargers may just have to because of the decisions they are making elsewhere. If there was one more roster spot to give out who knows, the team could have fielded another safety, likely giving the Bolts their fifth or sixth safety.
While that is way more than teams typically carry, the Chargers probably will only carry five cornerbacks on the roster. With Derwin James' versatility and the potential to play some of the depth safeties in nickel and dime, having depth there makes sense.

But at the end of the day it likely won't matter. Layne is already fighting an uphill battle to make the roster as is.
