5. Dave Canales

Dave Canales does not have any direct ties to Brandon Staley and does not come from a prominent coaching tree like the Shanahan coaching tree. However, Canales has worked under Shane Waldron, who was on the 2020 LA Rams staff with Brandon Staley, over the last two seasons.

Canales still has a solid resume and having that connection to Waldron will certainly put him on Staley's radar. This would be a dream situation for Canales as well as he grew up a Los Angeles native.

After one year with the USC Trojans in 2009, Canales followed Pete Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks, which is where he has been ever since. Canales spent seven years as the wide receivers coach for Seattle, coaching some of the best names in the sport in that time frame.

Canales then transitioned to the quarterbacks coach in 2018 and 2019. After two years of being the passing game coordinator, Canales transitioned back to being the quarterbacks coach in 2022 to work with Geno Smith.

Smith was the most surprising quarterback of the season and that absolutely increased Canales' stock in the coaching world. Not only was Smith great under the guidance of Waldron and Canales, but the Seahawks continuously aired the football out, something that the Chargers need to do more of.
