With the 123rd pick in this Chargers mock draft, the Bolts select Akayleb Evans, CB, Missouri

Cornerback may not seem like a position that the Chargers should take with their third selection in the 2022 NFL Draft but it would not be surprising at all if the Bolts took a corner in the fourth round or earlier. We just have to hope that the Bolts do land that starting right tackle if this is the route they are taking.

Having a deep, versatile secondary is so important to what Brandon Staley wants to do with the defense. The Bolts are in a good position with the talent they currently have but they need to bring in solid cover corners outside of the top three that can play snaps.

In order to do so, the best route of action is probably to sign a cheap, veteran cornerback for depth and draft someone early on day three of the draft. In this case, that prospect is Akayleb Evans, who would have potential in Staley's defense.

Evans does not project to be the type of corner that teams should want to be lining up on receivers one-on-one in man coverage. However, as a corner that is brought on in nickel and dime packages, he has a lot of potential early in his career.

Evans is six-foot-two with 4.4 speed and would be fantastic as the CB4/5 that is used situationally on passing downs. As he progresses in the league, the hope is that Staley and co. can work up some of his flaws and tap into that potential as an athlete.
