With the 79th pick in this LA Chargers mock draft, the Bolts select Calvin Austin, WR, Memphis
The LA Chargers take a wide receiver in the third round of this mock draft despite re-signing Mike Williams this offseason. While re-signing Williams may have removed the need to draft a receiver in round one, the team would still benefit from taking a receiver in the mid-rounds and addressing other needs (and trading back) makes it possible to take a receiver in round three.
That receiver is Calvin Austin, who made himself a household name during the NFL Combine. Austin had one of the most impressive combine showings of the year, showcasing his freakish athleticism and running a 4.32 40-yard dash.
The Bolts could put Austin in the slot and he could instantly have an impact as a gadget play option as well as someone who can get the football in his hands and pick up yards after the catch. More importantly, he could have an impact on this team as a great slot receiver for years to come and could really blossom into a great target.
The Chargers have depth on the outside at receiver and they do have options that can play in the slot. However, getting a dedicated burner to put in the slot and feast on linebacker mismatches would be great for this offense.
The decision was between drafting Austin and a tight end but with Tre' McKitty and Donald Parham, the Bolts can push off tight end one more round and instead draft the speedster receiver who picked up 1,149 yards in 12 games in 2021.
