4. Chicago Bears
This is what we could call the old switcharoo. One of the biggest free agents for the Chicago Bears this offseason is Akiem Hicks, who is on top of pretty much every Charger fans' wish list. Hicks is a solid veteran with ties to Brandon Staley and he would be a great addition to the defensive line moving forward.
The Bears have some cap space, but they don't have enough to pay Hicks what he is likely going to get. Hicks should get a salary around $8.5 million next season and with $30.7 million in cap space, the Bears should look to spend elsewhere.
However, if Hicks leaves the team then they are going to have a hole at defensive tackle. To fill that hole, that might pursue another run-stuffing defensive tackle with a lower ceiling that could come for cheaper. Not only that, but the team would get younger as well.
That is why Justin Jones could be a target for the Bears. The two teams would essentially be trading defensive tackles with the Chargers getting the better all-around player and the Bears getting the cheaper and younger player.
In a perfect world, the Chargers have both Hicks and Justin Jones on the same defensive line. If the team can bring in Hicks, retain Jones and draft an impactful run-stuffing defensive tackle in the 2022 NFL Draft then the team will be set on the interior defensive line.
