The LA Chargers are going to add to the running back room in some capacity this offseason. With four compensatory picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, there is a good chance the Bolts use a draft pick to add depth to the position. With $9.4 million left in free-agent spending space, the Chargers could also sign a running back as well.

The Chargers cannot go into 2022 with Larry Rountree and Joshua Kelley being the only backup options for Austin Ekeler. In fact, the Chargers would be best off cutting one of the two and keeping the other as a cheap RB4 that spends time on the practice squad. While the initial wave of free agency is over, there are still some free-agent running backs the Bolts could sign.

4 free-agent running backs who the Chargers could still sign:

1. Justin Jackson

Justin Jackson still has not been picked up by a team and if the Chargers draft a solid RB2 in the 2022 NFL Draft they might be more willing to bring a familiar face back in the building for a cheap contract. Jackson should not be the plan at RB2, but it would not be totally shocking if the Chargers do the simplest thing and re-sign him.

Jackson has shown sign after sign that he can be a talented depth running back. His big run against the New England Patriots and his huge game against the Houston Texans show just that. The problem is that he has not been able to stay healthy, so perhaps a lesser role as the RB3 would be best for him.

While I think it is more likely that the Chargers kick the tires on someone else considering they have not re-signed Jackson yet, it is still a possibility. Pro Football Focus projected Jackson to get a two-year deal worth $4.5 million with $2.5 million guaranteed. At this rate, the ceiling for Jackson's 2022 cap hit appears to be $2 million.
