2. The Chargers defense had a lot of success despite the matchup
The Chargers' defense has been horrible over the last two years with this season being particularly frustrating. The narrative last season was that Brandon Staley did not have the right pieces to execute his defensive scheme and after an aggressive offseason, Staley seemingly had the weapons to succeed.
That success really has not translated much into the 2022 season as the defense has had several bad showings that have made many question if Staley is the defensive genius that he was touted to be before the season.
While it was far from perfect on Sunday night, the Chargers' defense showed up to play against a 49ers offense that has a lot of dangerous weapons and held them to only 22 points. Against one of the best offensive minds in the entire sport that has to be considered a huge win.
The third-down efficiency certainly could have been better as the 49ers converted nine of 17 third downs. The run defense was not great either but compared to the rest of the season, the Chargers actually played better than they had been before.
There are some big pieces missing on this defense and while they are not all going to return, once the team gets Joey Bosa back to actually generate some pressure while rushing four we could start seeing the defense that played really well in Week 1 and 2.
Speaking of Joey Bosa coming back...
