Chargers draft TCU QB Max Duggan in what is the worst pick of the draft

After taking two TCU wide receivers in Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis, the LA Chargers decided they wanted to complete the trifecta. Thus, the team drafted TCU quarterback Max Duggan with the team's last pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

That is not a typo. The Chargers drafted a quarterback despite having Justin Herbert and already having a second quarterback on the depth chart. Keep in mind that the team did not draft a single running back, tight end, or member of the secondary in this entire draft class. Instead, they drafted a QB.

One pick, particularly in the seventh round, is not going to ruin an entire draft class. It would be incredibly hyperbolic to suggest that. What isn't hyperbolic is the fact that is easily the worst draft pick the Chargers made and might just be one of the worst picks in the entire draft.

Chargers drafting Max Duggan is an awful mistake

Look, this doesn't even have anything to do with Duggan's game. The quarterback certainly has flaws and if we really wanted to pick those apart we could. The problem with this pick is the waste of an asset and awful roster management.

The Chargers carried three quarterbacks all of last season on the active roster. As a result, the team had to trim other areas of the roster and only carried five active wide receivers (90% of NFL teams carry six active receivers). And what do you know, this burned the team as the wide receiver depth was tested last season.

With the rookies in LA it does not seem likely that the Chargers will run five receivers again but having a third quarterback will take away from other areas of the roster. If the Chargers loved Duggan so much then great! Just don't waste the cap space by re-signing Easton Stick.

And once again, the Chargers did not take a single tight end, defensive back or running back in this draft class. All three of those areas could have used an injection of depth, even if it was just a seventh-rounder that added special teams value.

You know who doesn't add special teams value? Max Duggan. But hey, at least the Chargers kept Stick around because he seems nice and can be a healthy scratch every single week of the season.
