If the LA Chargers are going to draft a cornerback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft then Trent McDuffie seems like the most realistic possibility. There is a slim chance than Derek Stingley, who is a top-10 prospect to most, falls to the Chargers at 17 because of injury concerns. It would not be the first time the Chargers get an elite defensive back with the 17th pick because they fell in the draft.

However, the best option that we know is most likely going to be on the board for the Chargers at 17 is Trent McDuffie, who comes in as the fans' second-favorite pick for the Chargers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Brandon Staley spoke candidly at the NFL Combine about adding depth to the secondary and the fact that as long as he is head coach he will pursue cover corners. That is no surprise as Staley's defense thrives on having versatile depth in the secondary and the team did not have that in 2021.

That means that the team could very well take a cornerback in the first round even if they bring in a free-agent cornerback. Sure, if the team signs a big name like J.C. Jackson then they probably wait, but if they make a lesser signing like Rasul Douglas then a first-round corner is still on the table.

McDuffie fits the versatility billing as he could help both on the outside and the inside (although he will play outside more) and he is a good tackler that will help in the run game as well.
