Best backup QB free agents to possibly replace Chase Daniel: 3. Cam Newton

Remember when Cam Newton walked onto the field against the Arizona Cardinals as a newly re-signed member of the Carolina Panthers? He grabbed the ball near the goal line and rushed into the end zone. From there, he ripped off his helmet and stared into the camera while continually screaming “I’m back!” Turns out, that would be Newton’s highlight of the season.

The former league MVP has absolutely nothing left in the gas tank. The days of him being amongst the games best or being a viable starter in the league are over. Newton was God awful last season. Even with numerous starts under his belt, he failed to register a single game of at least 200 passing yards. Don’t even get us started with his accuracy. During a Week 12 game against the Miami Dolphins, the Panthers were blown off the field by 23 points. In the process, he completed only 23% of his passes to go along with two interceptions.

Although Newton is done as a big-time player, he can still be viable as Justin Herbert’s backup. After all, he did have a few flashes of decent play. In Week 11, Newton completed over 77% of his passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 46 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Newton is more than capable of filling in every now and then. As long as Herbert doesn’t miss a protracted amount of time, Newton can keep things afloat.
