LA Chargers 53-man roster predictions, special teams:

  • Kicker: Michael Badgley
  • Punter: Ty Long
  • Long Snapper: Cole Mazza

I know, the first thing that jumps off the page is the fact that Michael Badgley is still the kicker. I am by no means a Badgley apologist and I will admit that he is not a great NFL kicker and he really hurt the team last season.

However, as things stand today, I cannot say that undrafted free agent Alex Kessman is going to take the job from Badgley. There certainly is the possibility, and a good one at that, but it is going to take a strong camp from Kessman to win that job.

Kessman has a bazooka of a right leg but he also had accuracy problems in college. He made 79.3% of his kicks last year, which was better than Badgley, but it was also the best year of his collegiate career. A 71.3% career rate in college is not the most promising.

Again, if he comes out and wins the kicking battle in camp then it is over for Badgley. As it stands right now, I think it is slightly more likely that Badgley gets the spot while Kessman looms on the practice squad ready to play after Badgley’s first bad game.

Next. Predicting every game of the 2021 season

Ty Long is an okay punter and I would have liked to see the team sign Thomas Morstead, but they didn’t. The hope is that it won’t matter and that Long won’t be on the field very often in the 2021 season.
