LA Chargers 53-man roster predictions, safeties:

  1. Derwin James
  2. Nasir Adderley
  3. Alohi Gilman
  4. Mark Webb

This is the position that I am worried the most about on the roster. It would not be shocking if the LA Chargers signed a veteran safety, such as Tre Boston, to help with depth as the Chargers do not have much depth here.

With only five cornerbacks as well the Chargers are about one member short of the typical defensive back room. You could easily substitute Joe Reed for another corner or one of the linebackers for a corner, but there is nobody that I like in the building to do so.

Things will change with camp, though, and this roster will be updated.

Again, the best-case scenario of this group is really exciting. Derwin James is an All-Pro safety and the hope is that he can stay healthy and play his first full season since his rookie year in 2018. Nasir Adderley also has a lot of potential as a ballhawk and was a potential first-round pick in 2019 that fell to the Bolts in the second.

The problem is that James is injury prone and Adderley has been terrible. The hope is that James can stay healthy and that Adderley’s play has been influenced by injuries in his rookie year and a wonky COVID year in 2020. Those are not crazy things to expect to turn around.

However, there is no guarantee that they do happen and the depth behind them is not great. The Chargers have sixth-round Alohi Gilman and seventh-round Mark Webb as the third and fourth safety options.
