With the 13th overall pick, the LA Chargers select Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech
Luckily in my first-round mock draft, I did not really leave it up for debate. There is no wide receiver for the team to potentially take, which is something that some fans want to see. Best player available is not a good draft strategy for the position that the LA Chargers are in.
Instead, the choice is between Christian Darrisaw, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Jaycee Horn. While I think the Chargers could go with Horn based on Tom Telesco’s draft history, Brandon Staley’s press conference on Thursday was rather revealing.
Staley reiterated that cornerback and tackle are two huge needs for the Bolts. Size is a huge factor when it comes to the tackle position, which favors Darrisaw over Vera-Tucker.
Staley also said that he values a cornerback who can play man coverage and can move around the defense. This does favor Jaycee Horn, but it also favors Asante Samuel Jr, who I think the team will be targeting in the second round.
Thus, the team goes with Darrisaw, who is a completely capable starting left tackle that should be exactly what the LA Chargers need. He is not Sewell or Slater, but he is a more traditional left tackle than Slater and is the easiest selection to make.
It is not the sexiest pick but it is the right pick.
