2. The LA Chargers are ninth in the league in salary cap

The Bolts also rank well compared to the rest of the league in terms of available cap for 2021. Los Angeles comes in at ninth in the league when it comes to cap room. That compares favorably to not just the league, but also their division rivals. The Broncos are projected to be 12th in the league in available cap room while the Chiefs and Raiders sit at 25th and 26th respectively.

That’s also why fans shouldn’t be too concerned about the worst salary cap drop possible. Assuming a $25-30 million cap decrease, the Chargers would still be working in the black as Spotrac shows. 23 other teams would have worse cap situations than LA.

Spotrac also shows a notable amount of teams with negative cap room. Given the current figure, approximately 15 teams would be functioning in the red. If the cap drops only $15M instead of $25 million, 12 teams still would be below $0 in available spending.

There are certainly teams that the Chargers will have to compete with for some free agents, but being top 10 in available cap room gives them a leg up over most of the league.

Fans will wonder what the exact contract numbers will be for guys like Hunter Henry or Michael Davis, yet it’s not quite a big deal when only a handful of teams can put together similar offers.
