Free-agent wide receivers the LA Chargers could target: 1. A.J. Green
A.J. Green is not even close to the same wide receiver that he used to be and Charger fans should not be expecting a Pro Bowl receiver if Green was to find himself in the powder blue. With a mix of injuries and age, Green has regressed over the last two seasons.
He still produced for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020. He finished the season with 47 receptions for 523 yards and two touchdowns. If the Chargers could get a 50-catch, 500-yard season out of a free agent with the young receivers getting better then it would be a big win.
It is not like Williams was significantly better in 2020. He was better, but he hauled in 48 receptions for 756 yards and five touchdowns.
The good thing about Green’s regression is that he is going to be cheap. I would expect Green to get somewhere around $5 million on a one-year deal, meaning that the Chargers would save a total of $10 million in cap space.
That $10 million is huge and could help the team address other needs on the roster as well.
Green also brings with him a veteran presence that could help the development of the young receivers on the roster. While Keenan Allen is a great leader, having another veteran with seven Pro Bowls can’t hurt.
