Honorable mentions and miscellaneous candidates
Urban Meyer is someone who will garner a lot of attention. The Chargers are the second job he stated interest in aside from the Jaguars, per Chip Brown of 247 Sports. If it doesn’t work out with the Jaguars in the end, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Chargers go for him. That being said, most reports seem to indicate he’s a lock for the Jacksonville job.
Robert Saleh is a great defensive candidate if the Chargers don’t feel that being offensively minded is essential. We’ve heard a lot more noise from Detroit and Atlanta in regards to hiring Saleh than Los Angeles though. I think the offensive ingenuity behind Herbert will be too important for ownership to hire a defensive coordinator.
Matt Campbell and Pat Fitzgerald both sit around +700 odds. If there will be college candidates truly in play for the Chargers job, it’s them. Campbell is the likelier name given the quick rise of Iowa State in Big 12 football. Fitzgerald has been a more classic Big 10 coach at Northwestern with less of an offensive flair.
Ultimately, the Chargers will interview 10-12 candidates per Jim Trotter. Expect this to be a more expansive coaching search than last time. There will be guys under consideration who may not be on this list. With Dean Spanos more involved in this coaching search, there could be a lot of twists and turns.
