Josh McDaniels

If you been reading Bolt Beat for the past few months…you probably know what I think about Josh McDaniels as the next coach. There are clear connections here that are hard to ignore though.

Education connections to Tom Telesco seem to be the theme of the day. John Carroll University produced both McDaniels and Telesco as football players who would later go into roles in the NFL.

McDaniels has really only been linked to the Chargers job by reporters like Benjamin Allbright and Albert Breer. The buzz is very quiet for him elsewhere, so one has to figure his connection to Telesco plays into that.

Herbert and McDaniels have a bit of a relationship as well. McDaniels lavished praise onto Herbert throughout the pre-draft process and since he’s been in the league. The two met at the combine extensively and Herbert seems to have a lot of respect for him in return.

It probably doesn’t hurt McDaniels’ case that he led a 45-0 gashing of the Chargers at SoFi stadium from an offensive standpoint. Some have talked about that game as a job audition and whether it was due to his own performance or the Chargers’ bad performance, he passed with flying colors. It was without a doubt one of the best days on the field for Cam Newton this season.

There’s a lot of questions about what McDaniels would look like in a second chance head coaching gig, but there are connections to Telesco and the star quarterback that boost his odds.
