Free agents the LA Chargers must re-sign: 1. Hunter Henry

Hunter Henry is going to be the priciest free agent for the LA Chargers in 2021 but that should not stop the team from re-signing the tight end. The team is in a salary-cap pinch there is some salary that needs to be reworked but I just do not think they can afford to let Henry go.

First of all, the priority moving forward has to be to give Justin Hebert the best situation possible. Not re-signing the team’s best tight end, and one of Herbert’s favorite targets, is not creating the best situation for the young quarterback.

Second of all, if the team lets Henry walk in free agency then they are going to have to draft a tight end reasonably high in the 2021 NFL Draft. Donald Parham is not a good enough blocker to be a legitimate TE1 and Virgil Green’s time with the team is likely done as well.

The team is not going to get a reliable passing target that is also a solid blocker late in the NFL Draft. You could make the case for signing a cheaper free agent tight end but the options are few and far between.

Henry has stayed healthy this season, which was always the biggest question mark and the reason why the Bolts franchise tagged him instead of signing an extension last offseason.

Henry might not be this top-five tight end that we all thought he could be but is a more-than-reliable pass-catcher that is a plus blocker as well. You just do not let someone like that slip through your fingers when you have a fantastic young quarterback on his rookie contract.

Hunter Henry has earned that extension. Give it to him.
