Free agents the LA Chargers must re-sign: 4. Sam Tevi

This sounds absolutely absurd and if you would have told me back in the summer that I would be writing a piece that including the sentence “the LA Chargers should re-sign Sam Tevi” then I would have called you insane.

However, Tevi has been better than expected this season. Don’t get me wrong, he has not been fantastic and the offensive line has been woeful this season but he has shown an improvement this season that no Charger fan was really expecting.

Now, he should not be re-signed to be the starting left tackle. However, there is value in bringing Tevi back as the swing tackle. The Chargers should be drafting a tackle early on in the 2021 NFL Draft and having Tevi be that swing tackle instead of Pipkins is a much better outlook.

Because there will be a week where the rookie or Bryan Bulaga (who has not been able to stay healthy) is out and they need someone who they know can actually handle the job without being atrocious.

Trey Pipkins has not shown the ability to do that. He has been downright awful. Tevi at least provides some optimism that the team can throw him in there without killing Justin Herbert.

Tevi has experience on both sides of the line and he is not really going to have a free-agent market. It makes a lot of sense for the Chargers to reward Tevi with another contract for depth purposes rather than just banking on Pipkins to take that next step.
